Properties of Materials Handled

A person familiar with the chemical and physical properties of materials handled in the facility, as well as their chemical behavior under both normal and upset conditions this is especially important for facilities with chemical reactivity hazards. 

Pumps handling flammable materials represent a significant potential for spill and subsequent fire. This is due to damage to seals and failures of other potential leak points. The first consideration in fire protection for pumps is their location relative to other equipment, vessels, process structures and buildings housing personnel, and key control or utility systems. When locating a pump, consideration should be given to the size, properties of material handled, temperature, and pressure.

After a pesticide is manufactured in its relatively pure form (the technical grade material) the next step is formulation - processing a pesticide compound into liquids, granules, dusts, and powders to improve its properties of storage, handling, application, effectiveness, or safety [9]. The hazard communication standard requires that all personnel receive training concerning the types of materials handled in the workplace and the potential hazards associated with handling and use of these materials. In addition, the standard requires that a MSDS for each hazardous material be made available for individual employee reference. The MSDS outlines specific material chemical and physical properties, exposure information, emergency response information, regulatory information, and any other information of significance concerning the material. 

Observe normal precautions appropriate to the circumstances and quantity of material handled. Care should be used in handling strong or concentrated ammonia solutions because of the caustic nature of the solution and the irritating properties of its vapor. Before containers are opened, they should be well cooled. The closure should be covered with a cloth or similar material while opening. Ammonia solution should not be tasted and inhalation of the vapor should be avoided. Ammonia solution should be handled in a fume cupboard. Eye protection, gloves, and a respirator are recommended. 

A number of different evaporator designs are illustrated in Fig. 8, and the variations based upon these concepts are many. Often, physical properties and materials handling considerations for the feed or the bottom streams (e.g., solids content, viscosity, heat sensitivity) will indicate that one evaporator type will be better suited for the duty than other types. 

Prior to the expansion of the scope of the program to include environmental and health effects materials, the primary focus of the Department s hazardous materials transportation regulatory program had been upon the properties of materials that pose substantial potential hazards to persons or property from acute exposures. Consequently, the program had been directed primarily towards controlling the handling of such materials in transportation. 

Lining material shall be able to resist erosive and corrosive properties of material being handled. A small test piece may be prepared by the lining material and tested at actual operating conditions—by suspending in the liquid or in the gas duct. 

Review toe hazardous properties and compatability of materials handled in each section through a checklist of toe hazards and potential consequences of materials in each section, considering the quantities involved.
