There is growing public awareness of safety issues, and of the increasing rate at which complex technological artefacts which can affect safety are being developed and deployed. This awareness is, at least in part, stimulated by recent accidents, e.g. Piper Alpha and the spate of aircraft crashes in the last few years. With growing awareness, there is increased pressure from the public, professional societies and some certification agencies for the development of stricter controls over the design and deployment of safety critical systems.
