Professional development and keeping current in your field is the responsibility of every professional and it includes continuing education and maintaining competence in the held. Accredited safety certification will help to assure that you are kept up to date and continue your competency.

There is growing public awareness of safety issues, and of the increasing rate at which complex technological artefacts which can affect safety are being developed and deployed. This awareness is, at least in part, stimulated by recent accidents, e.g. Piper Alpha and the spate of aircraft crashes in the last few years. With growing awareness, there is increased pressure from the public, professional societies and some certification agencies for the development of stricter controls over the design and deployment of safety critical systems. Whilst many approaches to this problem are advocated, most of them involve the production of a safety case—documented reasons why a system is believed to be fit to deploy.

Surveys of professional lawn chemical applicators were conducted during the summer and fall of 2004. Subjects recruited included participants in Ohio State University s OARDC (Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center)-sponsored turf care professional educational seminars (Northeast Ohio Lawn Care Seminars). Approximately 300 professionals attended these events (held at the Wooster campus of Ohio State) to inform practitioners of best management practices, new technology, and health and safety issues. Participants included those who own and work in the lawn care industry in Ohio, spanning companies from small, one-person owner operated firms to large franchised national outfits. Professionals attend these seminars for purposes of certification participation in the survey was optional. 

In April of 1980, BCSP issued Technical Report No. 1 titled Curricula Development and Examination Study Guidelines. Ralph J. Vernon, Ph.D., CSP, was the author. That Report was issued in response to a perceived need to compile and publish data that would provide insight into the academic preparation and experience required by those who chose to attain certification as a safety professional and would take what was then a single-level BCSP examination. 

The BCSP is involved in the development, coordination, implementation, administration, and maintenance of professional certification examinations to individual practitioners of various safety and health disciplines, including system safety. They offer examination sessions throughout the year at specific, approved locations across the country. The BCSP can provide additional detailed information concerning certification requirements.
