Processing aids peroxide

Processing aids are used to directly influence the synthesis process function as reaction controllers. Depending on their chemical state they can function as reaction accelerators (the actual catalysts and starters or initiator substances), crosslinkers and/or hardeners, reaction inhibitors or catalyst deactivators, molecular weight controllers, chain splitters or lengtheners. From a chemical standpoint (structure and method of function) the radical builders, mainly peroxides and azo compounds, are treated separately from the catalysts which are mainly metals, metal oxides, salts (redox systems) and organo-metal compounds. The carrier substances, promoters and deactivators are placed in the catalyst class of substances. [Pg.16]

Ester plasticizers (phthalates and phosphates) that are used to plasticize PVC (see Chapter 1) are also used as process aids, particularly with NBR and CR. Polymerizable plasticizers such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate are particularly useful for peroxide curing rubbers. They act as plasticizers or tackifiers during mixing and undergo polymerization by peroxide initiation during cure. [Pg.249]

Silicones are produced in the form of resins, oils, greases, and also as rubberlike elastic products. These materials also appear as processing aids in the manufacturing of plastics, as impregnation compounds, coatings, separating materials, mold releases, etc. They can be identified because they contain the element silicon. To test for silicon, mix approximately 30 mg of the sample with 100 mg sodium carbonate and 10 mg sodium peroxide. Heat this in a platinum or nickel crucible over a flame. Dissolve the melt in a few drops of water, boil it, and then add dilute nitric acid until the solution is neutral or slightly acidic.
