Processability and Applications

The liquid or low-melting solid monomers can be cured to the solid state by incorporating a curing catalyst and heating the mixtures below the decomposition temperature. Moreover, the cured solids are transparent and hard polymers formed of three-dimensional networks with moderate thermostability. [Pg.178]

In the course of curing, the viscosity vanes from thin to syrupy liquids. This is convenient for impregnating reinforcing materials, such as fiberglass scrim, used in making wiring or circuit boards for electronics applications. [Pg.178]

A compound containing two or three unsaturated groups would be expected to polymerize to a cross-linked, solid, and nonlinear thermosetting polymer. Fluorinated compounds that have only one unsaturated group can be used in a mixture with our monomers to polymerize to a solid polymer of a thermoset nature and this is a convenient way to enhance the ease of processing. [Pg.178]

Dielectric constants of these materials can be further lowered by known means such as by incorporating air bubbles into the materials or by inhibiting crystallization. A difference of a couple of hundredths in the DE value may be important when one is at the low extremes. Recently Singh et al. calculated the DEs ofpolyimide films from the measured free volume fraction and found that the calculated values, are close to the experimental result.1415  [Pg.178]

In 1991 Groh and Zimmerman16 estimated the theoretical lower limit of the refractive index of amorphous organic polymers by using the Lorentz-Lorentz equation and reported the lower limit to be very close to 1.29, while in 1979 Dislich17 proposed a limit of about 1.33 from a screening of published polymer data. [Pg.178]

The manufacture, processing and application of a particular material as an impressed-current anode requires knowledge of several physical characteristics. Knowledge and attention to these characteristics is necessary to design for anode longevity with maximum freedom from electrical and mechanical defects. [Pg.162]

Handbook of elastomers , A.K. Bhowmick and H.L. Stephens Marcel Dekker (1988) Series Plastics Engineering, Volume 19 ISBN 0824778006. This handbook systematically addresses the manufacturing techniques, properties, processing, and applications of rubbers and rubber-like materials. The Handbook of Elastomers provides authoritative information on natural rubbers, synthetic rubbers, liquid rubbers, powdered rubbers, rubber blends, thermoplastic elastomers, and rubber-based composites— offering solutions to many practical problems encountered with rubber materials. [Pg.601]

Figures 2 and 5 show the increase of the mass average molar mass, R i, with conversion for the systems with branched and linear prepolymers, respectively. These results indicate that addition of the branching monomer in the first stage yields much higher values of R, and the gel point is reached at lower conversion than addition in the third stage. Translated into practical properties this means that the processing and application qualities (e.g. flow) of a paint based on formulation F40 will be inferior to those of one on the basis of for-... Viscoelastic and transport properties of polymers in the liquid (solution, melt) or liquid-like (rubber) state determine their processing and application to a large extent and are of basic physical interest [1-3]. An understanding of these dynamic properties at a molecular level, therefore, is of great importance. However, this understanding is complicated by the facts that different motional processes may occur on different length scales and that the dynamics are governed by universal chain properties as well as by the special chemical structure of the monomer units [4, 5],... [Pg.3]
