The objectives of this presentation are to discuss the general behavior of non isothermal chain-addition polymerizations and copolymerizations and to propose dimensionless criteria for estimating non isothermal reactor performance, in particular thermal runaway and instability, and its effect upon polymer properties. Most of the results presented are based upon work (i"8), both theoretical and experimental, conducted in the author s laboratories at Stevens Institute of Technology. Analytical methods include a Semenov-type theoretical approach (1,2,9) as well as computer simulations similar to those used by Barkelew LS) ... [Pg.15]

Acknowledgment is made to the Donors of the Petroleum Research Fund, administered by the American Chemical Society, and to the Materials Research Laboratory, University of Massachusetts (Amherst), for grants in support of this research. The National Science Foundation, through the Expedited Award for Novel Research at Stevens Institute, has enabled K.E.G. to develop the processing of such transition metal containing organometallic polymers. ... [Pg.460]

As mentioned earlier, reformate from a fuel processor often needs addition processing to reduce the carbon monoxide levels. Researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology are developing a microscale preferential oxidation (FrOx) reactor to decrease the carbon monoxide level in the reformate stream to below 100 ppm. As part of their research, they used advanced computational fluid dynamic modeling. [Pg.536]

Dr. Tishler was very active in the American Chemical Society, serving for many years on the Board of Directors and as President in 1972. He received the Priestley Medal of the ACS in 1970. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Tishler received an honorary Sc.D. from Tufts University in 1956 and a D.Eng. from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1966. In 1987, he received the National Medal of Science. [Pg.338]

A few fundamental studies have also been reported on the topic of hydrogen peroxide synthesis by direct combination of H2 and 02 in a microreactor. A recent contribution ofVoloshin et al. [86] from the Stevens Institute ofTechnology shows the first results on the role of reaction conditions. A maximum concentration of 1.3 wt% H202 was achieved. Further studies are necessary, but this interesting direction warrants further investigation. [Pg.275]

Peter Koen, Stevens Institute Several years ago I looked at the amount of money Japan was putting into its Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI, in 2001 reorganized to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and compared it to ATP. I expected ATP to be funded to the tune of at least a few billion dollars, but it is not. What is wrong How are we sending out the message so that our congressmen and our representatives don t understand the importance of funding the basic research ... [Pg.54]

Peter A. Koen, Stevens Institute of Technology I wanted to comment about a cultural issue within the engineering department. I am in the technology management department at Stevens and teach a course to executives from companies on how to be a corporate entrepreneur. It is a 14-week course for two to three hours a week. At the end of that time, half of the groups get funding internally in their company anywhere between 100,000 and 500,000. In fact, 2 years ago one group actually got a commitment of a billion dollars at the end of 14 weeks. [Pg.82]
