Prickly

Because of the special stabiHty of the hexafluoroarsenate ion, there are a number of appHcations of hexafluoroarsenates. For example, onium hexafluoroarsenates (33) have been described as photoinitiators in the hardening of epoxy resins (qv). Lithium hexafluoroarsenate [29935-35-1] has been used as an electrolyte in lithium batteries (qv). Hexafluoroarsenates, especially alkaH and alkaline-earth metal salts or substituted ammonium salts, have been reported (34) to be effective as herbicides (qv). Potassium hexafluoroarsenate [17029-22-0] has been reported (35) to be particularly effective against prickly pear. However, environmental and regulatory concerns have severely limited these appHcations. 

In another extractor (Automatic Machinery and Electronics Inc. (AMC)) the individual fmits are cut in half as they pass a stationary knife. The halves are oriented in a vertical plane, picked up by synthetic mbber cups, and positioned across plastic serrated reamers revolving in a synchronized carrier in a vertical plane. As the fmit halves progress around the extractor turntable, the rotating reamers exert increasing pressure and express the juice. The oil and pulp contents in the juice increase with greater reaming pressure. The recoverable oil is removed in a separate step prior to juice extraction. Needle-sharp spikes prick the peel of the whole fmit, releasing oil that is washed away with water and recovered from the oil—water emulsion. 

Novel finishes have been developed from the traditional chlorination of wool (180). One, the IWS soft-handle process, gives an extremely soft hand to the wool fibers and reduces the prickly effect when wool is worn next to the skin (181). The other, the soft-handle luster treatment, improves the luster. This improvement is most apparent in knitted wool jersey fabrics. 

Keep in mind the temperaments and personalities of the people you want on the team, but don t make this a primary criterion for selection. For example, lone wolves can sometimes be prickly, but they may offer unique insights. And don t rule out known adversaries just because they don t like each other despite their differences they may well offer individual contributions.

Carmine is a colored pigment extracted from the female insect Coccus cacti or Dactylopius coccus, or its eggs. These insects live on prickly pear cactus in Mexico. The Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes brought the dye to Europe after seeing the Aztecs use it. 

The usual diagnostic methods, both skin tests and specific IgE with whole Anisakis extract, have a good sensitivity but a low specificity to such a degree that in 22% of blood donors specific IgE to the parasite is detected [40] and at least 20% of patients with acute urticaria have positive skin prick tests with whole Anisakis extract [41 ]. As for BAT with whole Anisakis extract, Gonzalez-Munoz et al. [42] report a sensitivity of 96% with a specificity of 96%, which are clearly higher values than those from specific IgE.

The further allergologic workup is recommended to be performed between 2 and 6 months after the reaction (table 3) [13]. A skin prick test should be performed with undiluted RCM. Afterwards, IDTs with RCM (300-320 mg/ml) diluted 10-fold in sterile saline and reading after 20 min are recommended [13]. As cross-reactivity is frequent, a panel of several different RCM should be tested in an attempt to find a skin test-negative product, which might be tolerated in future RCM examinations. 

True IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions to LAs are extremely rare [11-13]. Only single cases have been reported in the literature with positive prick tests [ 14,15]. A case of a positive open patch test in a patient suffering from contact urticaria after topical application of lidocaine, pilocaine mixture (Emla cream) might represent a true IgE-mediated allergy [16]. The maj ority of immediate-type reactions are non-immune in nature. 

In a study performed by Ruzicka et al. [23], 104 patients with positive patch tests to LAs and a history of contact dermatitis were tested with LA in a prick test and in an intradermal setting. All prick tests remained negative. There were 9 persons positive for procaine in the intradermal test and 3 positive for butanilicaine. There was no correlation to history in the patients with skin tests and no correlation between patch test results and results of the intradermal test [23]. 

Skin Test. Usually a battery of LAs is tested in the skin-prick test which is almost always negative. Then the intradermal test is performed with a 1 10 dilution of the substances. Undiluted LA preparations may commonly lead to false-positive reactions [30-32] in a rather high percentage of patients. 

Subcutaneous Provocation Testing. When prick and intradermal tests are negative, subcutaneous provocation testing is started using 0.1 ml of the undiluted LA solution followed by 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ml into the extensor side of the patients upper arm at 30-min intervals. For most of the patients it is possible to find a tolerable LA which is recommended for future applications [33] (table 3). In a long-term followup, Wasserfallen and Frei [32] found in 28 patients undergoing skin and subcutaneous provocative testing that over 3 years in 19 cases re-exposure to a tolerated LA was well tolerated without untoward reaction.
