Preventing Occupational Disease and Injury, Weeks JL, Levy BS, Wagner GR, eds. (APHA, 1991). [Pg.185]

Thus, there is a clear need to establish the relationship between the health effects of hazardous chemical agents in the environment and the level of occupational exposure to the body by means of an occupational exposure limit, in which a reference figure for the concentration of a chemical agent is set. In fact, occupational exposure limits (OELs) have been a feature of the industrialized world since the early 1950s. They were introduced, primarily in the United States, at a time when measures to prevent occupational diseases were considered more beneficial than compensating victims, and in this sense OELs have played an important part in the control of occupational illnesses. [Pg.363]

As an aside, it is interesting to note that the tetragonal compound FcNiN can be prepared. From the model, it was predicted that the compound should be ordered into alternate Fe and Ni layers perpendicular to the c axis with the N atoms filling all the octahedral interstices of the Fc layers. (The filled d - orbitals at the Ni atoms prevent occupation of the octahedral sites in a Ni layer.) This atomic ordering was indeed found. Further, with all localized electrons spin-paired, the compound is paramagnetic (224). [Pg.343]

Post-exposure prophylaxis, or the administration of pharmacological agents with the intent of preventing occupational HIV transmission after exposure, may be useful in certain circumstances. The decision to use post-exposure prophylaxis is complex and depends on a number of important factors, which should be evaluated on an individual, case-by-case basis. This decision should take... [Pg.892]

Primary prevention aims to prevent occupational exposure and other determinants of occupational asthma. Elimination of the sensitising agent is the most secure way of preventing exposure. If this is not practicable, reduction in exposure is combined with reducing the numbers of people exposed. [Pg.154]

In the work environment, the affected individual s employer and co-workers should be alert to risk factors for the development of anaphylaxis, and avoidance measures taken to prevent occupational exposures, e.g. non-powdered latex gloves should be used instead of powdered gloves to reduce airborne latex exposure [179(111)]. [Pg.175]

The ambient light information can used in the vehicle system to control the dashboard illumination and the air conditioning. An additional function of the rain sensor can be to detect sudden rain and close open windows or sun roofs in conjunction with an anti-pinch device to prevent occupant injury, of course. [Pg.480]

The National Health Insur c (Caisse Nationcd d Assurance Maladie - CNAM)/ Since 1945, CNAM, under the stqiervision of die Ministry of Health, has b n responsible for the conc ieasation of industrml accidents and the administration of occupational risks and occupational diseases. Its mission is also to prevent occupational accidents and occupational diseases by technical and financial means. CNAM administers the national hind for prevention which is based on contributions levied from enterprises. The prevention service and its regional offices and services is financed from this fund, as well as the work of INKS, the National Institute of Research and Safety. [Pg.101]

Public health. Preventive occupational health and safety is a function of the National Health Service Servizio Sanitaria Nationale - SSN). The Ministry of Health Ministero della Sanitaf is the central body and its main tasks consist of the national planning and co-ordination of all matters regarding public health. [Pg.268]

The depot may be physically isolated and a considerable distance away from the Medical Center (MEDCEN) or Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) responsible for providing medical support and consultation. The preventive/occupational medicine physicians are usually responsible for providing this support and are a source of information and guidance. Other governmental agencies have also been identified to assist medical personnel in acquiring solutions to unfamiliar medical problems related to chemical exposure (Exhibit 17-1). [Pg.398]

The aim of stmctural crushing is to reduce the energy of a crash that transfers to the interior. When a vehicle strikes another object or barrier, it stops quickly. Objects within or occupants continue to move at the original vehicle speed until they impact on something to slow them down. This is the second crash, discussed below. Passengers restrained to the vehicle structure or its components will stop with the uncrushed part of the vehicle. Frontal air bags help prevent occupants from striking the interior in front of them. [Pg.177]

The importance of preventing occupational contact psoriasis in the work environment goes beyond the morbidity and cost in managing these patients. As trauma may incite or trigger new lesions of psoriasis, it is potentially a medico-legal issue, especially in countries where workman s compensation is a major concern (Rietschel and Fowler 1995). [Pg.274]

Until ammonium persulfate, used to bleach flour, was prohibited in most countries in the 1950s, bakers often became sensitised to this substance. A law against the addition of ammonium persulfate to flour was one of the early steps taken to prevent occupational allergic contact dermatitis (Rietschel and Fowler 1995). [Pg.817]
