Limitation. The radiation dose received by the personnel handling radioactive material will never exceed the legally established dose limits. The distribution of medicinal products is regulated by the rules of GDP. According to that, only approved medicinal products may be distributed, and delivered exclusively to persons authorized for dispensing. In most countries, these persons are the pharmacists. However, in some countries radioactive compounds do constitute an exception to this rule, and have to be delivered directly to the physicians who use them for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in patients (nuclear medicine physicians and radiotherapists). 

For radiopharmaceuticals delivered to the (radio)pharmacist, nuclear medicine physician, or radiotherapist in a ready-to-use form (such as ° T1C1, FDG, l-cap-sules, I-iodide for radiolabeling, etc.), the manufacturer has to perform the analyses as described in the monographs. 

Radiopharmaceuticals labeled with " Tc are commercially available and are employed in more than 80% of all nuclear medicine investigations. Among the radionuclides, technetium-99m is most attractive to the nuclear medicine physician because of its optimal gamma energy for SPECT, its availability, its relatively low cost, and its easy-to-la-bel kit preparations for in-house use. Another advantage is the low radiation burden to patients, due primarily to its short half-life. The decay within hours also facilitates the handling of waste. 

The book should therefore not only be recommended for radiochemists and radiopharmacists, but also for nuclear medicine physicians using Tc-labeled pharmaceuticals in daily practice. 

There is, however, still no consensus whether calculated or fixed activities should be administered when treating hyperthyroidism. The goal of the treatment — to aim for the fastest possible elimination of thyrotoxicosis or to try to obtain euthy-roidism - should be discussed with the patient. In Graves disease, post-therapy hypothyroidism is common and occurs in most patients over time. Patients with toxic adenoma often reach euthyroidism off all medications. Most endocrinologists and nuclear medicine physicians would define cure as euthyroidism off medication, or under substitution with thyroxine. 

Often the amount of administered radioactivity has been used as the criterion to determine whether a patient should be hospitalized or not. T-treated patients, however, do not have the same iodine kinetics. The clearance of from ablated thyroid cancer patients is much faster than from patients treated for hyperthyroidism.
