In a rotary screen system plastisols for compact and textured products are applied to suitable substrates continuously from seamless, cylindrical nickel screens. The plastisols are fed into the screens and pressed through perforations to the substrate by a squeegee of flexible steel or rubber the substrate is supported by a counter-pressure roller, usually of chromium-plated steel. The principle is illustrated in Figure 111. [Pg.295]

Crushers and Roller M ills. In this equipment group, stress is appUed by either crushing single particles or a bed of particles between two solid surfaces. If a smooth finish is desired, a calender is used to process at the end of the processing cycle. A calender is a set of pressurized rollers usually made of chilled cast iron but sometimes steel. The calender is heated and operates in a continuous manner however, it is usually employed with vinyls and ABS polymer sheets. [Pg.68]

Roller Compaction. In roller compaction, the powder is compacted by means of pressure rollers (Figure 11.23). The powder is fed between two cylindrical rollers, rotating in opposite directions. The rollers may be flat, which will produce sheets of compacted material, or they maybe dimpled, in which case, briquettes in the shape of the dimples will be formed. If sheets are produced, they are milled and screened to the required size. Roller compaction requires less lubricant to be added than does slugging. [Pg.431]

The most difficult laboratory evaluation is that of high pressure roller presses. As discussed in Section 8.4.3 the conditions in the nip between the two counter rotating, converging roller surfaces depends on so many parameters, that it is practically impossible to accurately predict press performance. To simulate the process and get an insight into the macroscopic and microscopic events that occur during densification in the nip, a roller press simulator (Fig. 11.24) was designed and extensively used.
