Chill casting

Zinc rolling slabs have been cast successfully by semicontinuous direct-chill casting methods. This is the preferred method for superplastic zinc alloys which, because of their large freezing range, display unacceptable surface shrinkage when cast in open molds. [Pg.414]

The greatest use of cubic boron nitride is as an abrasive under the name Bora2on, in the form of small crystals, 1—500 p.m in si2e. Usually these crystals are incorporated in abrasive wheels and used to grind hard ferrous and nickel-based alloys, ranging from high speed steel tools and chilled cast-iron to gas turbine parts. The extreme hardness of the crystals and their resistance to attack by air and hot metal make the wheels very durable, and close tolerances can be maintained on the workpieces. [Pg.220]

The casting methods used in aluminum forming can be divided into three classes direct chill casting, continuous casting, and stationary casting. [Pg.198]

Direct chill casting is the pouring of molten aluminum into a water-cooled mold. Contact cooling water is sprayed onto the aluminum as it is dropped into the mold, and the aluminum ingot falls into a water bath at the end of the casting process. [Pg.222]

By adding relatively large amounts of carbon (several weight per cent) to iron, it was found in China (500 BCE) that large and complex cast-iron shapes could be made readily. Through chill-casting, cast-iron becomes very hard (albeit brittle) this gives it considerable wear resistance. [Pg.3]

The rolls should be of close grained chilled cast iron. The surface of the rolls must be ground to a perfectly true diameter free from pinholes and should be highly polished to assist the production of first quality defect- free sheeting with a high degree of surface finish. [Pg.214]
