COUNTER-PRESSURE

As reported in a lot of reviews, extractions with supercritical solvents have a very promising commercial potential. Until now the commercialization is mainly restricted to batchwise extraction of solids with carbon dioxide (e g. decaffeination of coffee and tea, extraction of hop). Laboratory experiments and operation of small-scale pilot plants gave favourable economic values for continuous extraction of liquids with C02 and other gases. Only a few extractions with C02 or C HS are performed already on a small industrial scale. For research purposes and product development a new high pressure counter-current extraction plant was erected. To get greater amounts of product the explosionproof plant was constructed in pilot scale using a special modular concept and an effective visual control system. [Pg.621]

Until separation techniques such as chromatography (28,29) and counter-current extraction had advanced sufficientiy to be of widespread use, the principal alkaloids were isolated from plant extracts and the minor constituents were either discarded or remained uninvestigated. With the advent of, first, column, then preparative thin layer, and now high pressure Hquid chromatography, even very low concentrations of materials of physiological significance can be obtained in commercial quantities. The alkaloid leurocristine (vincristine, 22, R = CHO), one of the more than 90 alkaloids found in Catharanthus roseus G. Don, from which it is isolated and then used in chemotherapy, occurs in concentrations of about 2 mg/100 kg of plant material. [Pg.533]

The links between levels of exposure and inconvenience caused by ventilation noise are described in an investigation carried out on office workers.- Technical measurements and analyses of the ventilation noise at 155 typical office workplaces were in this study combined with assessments by the office workers of the level of disturbance that they experienced, the effect on working performance, fatigue, stress-related pain, and headaches. The average noise level was about 40 dB(A) at two of the workplaces, while it was about 35 dB(A) at two others. It emerged from rhe narrow-band analyses that the sound pressure levels of rhe infrasound were not in any event of an order that this type of sound frequencies (below 20 Hz) could contribute to any disturbance effects.
