Fig. 1. Periodic boundary conditions protect the inner simulation cell from disturbing effects of having all its particles close to the surface. With PBCs in force, as a particle moves out of the box on one side, one of its images will move back into the box on the opposite side. Fig. 1. Figure 4.36 shows the hull free-body diagram. Disturbance effects (wind, waves and current) are not included. [Pg.101]

The links between levels of exposure and inconvenience caused by ventilation noise are described in an investigation carried out on office workers.- Technical measurements and analyses of the ventilation noise at 155 typical office workplaces were in this study combined with assessments by the office workers of the level of disturbance that they experienced, the effect on working performance, fatigue, stress-related pain, and headaches. The average noise level was about 40 dB(A) at two of the workplaces, while it was about 35 dB(A) at two others. It emerged from rhe narrow-band analyses that the sound pressure levels of rhe infrasound were not in any event of an order that this type of sound frequencies (below 20 Hz) could contribute to any disturbance effects. Any steps taken to counter the sound frequencies of the ventilation noise under 50 Hz, i.e., the point of btersection between the threshold curve of auditory perception and the spectral level distribution curve of... [Pg.346]

WE SPOKE WITH SUZANNE at her home in 2001. A resident of a small Midwestern subdevelopment, she told us about her problems with lawn care, especially chemicals, and how she and her family have reconciled themselves to their use, despite disturbing effects. [Pg.1]

Treatment of separately collected and reconcentrated baths that initially contain dyestuff concentrations of approximately 1 g/L and are reconcentrated to approximately 10-20 g/L dyestuff by membrane filtration. Such techniques yield considerable amounts of recyclable water, but care has to be taken to avoid any disturbing effect during reuse caused by salt and alkali content in the regenerate. The concentrated dyestuff solution can be treated with similar methods as concentrated dye solutions from fillings of padder. [Pg.382]

There are some difficulties of studying non-field-enhanced surface reactions with field ion emission techniques. Aside from the uncertain effects of the very high applied field, there is also the disturbing effect of field dissocation, which will complicate a correct identification of the true desorbed species. However, some of these difficulties are not insurmountable. A few precautionary procedures which can be followed are listed below ... [Pg.296]

The disturbing effects of the applied field can be reduced by using pulsed-laser stimulated field desorption which needs a field strength only about half that needed in regular field desorption and the effects of the field should be reduced to about one-quarter of the original ones since an energy level shift by the polarization effect is proportional to F2 electric field, in fact, is believed to be one of the factors which can be responsible for the enhanced chemical reactivity of the surface. [Pg.296]

While for m-l.c. s the state of order is only determined by the anisotropic interactions of neighbouring molecules, for the polymers additionally a disturbing effect of the backbone via the flexible spacer on the anisotropic order of the mesogenic side chains is to be expected and vice versa. Therefore it is of interest to investigate whether... [Pg.121]

In a study of the long-term acceptability of Mirena, 165 women were examined during and after 6 and 36 months of use. There were changes in menstrual bleeding pattern in 161 women (98%), with cessation or transient absence of menstruation in 75 (47%) and 14 (9%) women respectively. As in many other studies, amenorrhea was considered by most women (81%) as a welcome effect. The device had no disturbing effects on the women or their partners during sexual intercourse (59). [Pg.294]

DMDOHEMA were limited and did not exert disturbing effects on the implementation of the DIAMEX process. [Pg.16]

Mycotoxins present a high severity of hazard level because of the serious long-term effects on humans, especially immunological disturbances and cancer developments. While the public are increasingly aware of the immediate health-disturbing effects of viral and bacterial-contaminated foods... [Pg.252]

An ultracentrifuge is a high-speed centrifuge equipped with a suitable optical system (usually schlieren or interference optics, the latter being particularly useful when low concentrations are involved) for recording sedimentation behaviour and with facilities for eliminating the disturbing effects of convection currents and vibration. The sample is contained in a sector-shaped cell mounted in a rotor (usually c. [Pg.32]

In this section, caffeine is discussed only briefly and the focus is on other stimulants that produce psychiatric disorders. Caffeine can lead to a withdrawal syndrome characterized by lethargy, irritability, and headache, but withdrawal appears to occur in less than 3% of regular coffee drinkers. Moreover, the morbidity associated with caffeine overdose, which can include disturbing effects on sleep and heart rhythm, is much less than the morbidity associated with other stimulants. [Pg.729]

Spontaneous contraction of a liquid surface. The fundamental property of liquid surfaces is that they tend to contract to the smallest possible area. This tendency is shown in the spherical form of small drops of liquid, in the tension exerted by soap films as they tend to become less extended, and in many other properties of liquid surfaces. Plateau1 has undertaken a prolonged study of the forms assumed by liquid surfaces, under conditions when the disturbing effect of gravity is absent he showed that the surfaces always assume a curvature such that, if and are the principal radii of curvature at any point,... [Pg.1]

Brownian fluctuations, inertia, nonhydrodynamic interactions, etc.) to lead to exponential divergence of particle trajectories, and (2) a lack of predictability after a dimensionless time increment (called the predictability horizon by Lighthill) that is of the order of the natural logarithm of the ratio of the characteristic displacement of the deterministic mean flow relative to the RMS displacement associated with the disturbance to the system. This weak, logarithmic dependence of the predictability horizon on the magnitude of the disturbance effects means that extremely small disturbances will lead to irreversibility after a very modest period of time. [Pg.69]
