There is an increase in the volume of solid plastics waste. In recent decades, due to the worldwide use of plastic products, plastics waste has come to be a major component of both industrial and municipal wastes. The key features of decanter development described as occurring during the last 30 years are by no means fully developed. In capacity and size terms, there will still be larger, longer and faster machines to come. There is much still to be done in the development of control systems for the decanter, leading to complete automation of decanter processes, with associated telemetering. 

As new production processes develop, in parallel with the derivation of new products, then the decanter will be adapted to keep pace with such changes. Oil production and refining will continue to be a challenge to the decanter manufacturer, especially as production moves into less hospitable zones. There is a wealth of food, protein, biochemical and pharmaceutical applications awaiting the efficient clean-in-place process for decanters, while the increasing demands on municipal and industrial waste treatment will also add to the application range. If nuclear power returns to favour, then here also the decanter will have a part to play, especially once it is fully automated. The need to be able to process low-grade metal ores will also need help from the decanter.

The present trend in rotating equipment is toward inereasing design speeds, whieh inereases operational problems from vibration lienee the importanee of vibration analysis. A thorough appreeiation of vibration analysis will aid in the diagnoses of rotor dynamies problems. 

The present trend of material seleeted for collection headers is toward Incoloy 800. The cast alloys used, HK and HT, have failed in most instances because of their inherently low ductility—especially after exposure to elevated temperature. It now appears that wrought alloys should be used in preference to cast alloys unless the higher creep strength of the east alloy is required and the inherently low ductility of the aged cast alloy is considered in the design.

However, from a commercial standpoint, modifying the polymer mainly for improved flame retardancy is usually done reluctantly, since other properties usually suffer and cost is generally increased. For reasons explained in Section 19.5.3, large-scale LC employs larger particles (10-70 xm) than analytical HPLC. This increases the Cmu term by deepening the intraparticle pores containing stagnant mobile phase to be penetrated by the solute. (See note to Table 19.1). SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS PRESENT TRENDS AND EXPECTATIONS IN RADIATION ONCOLOGY... 

The use of nitroglycerine tablets has been known for several decades to dilate the blood vessels promptly thereby decreasing the blood pressure and thus giving instant relief from angina. However, the present trend is to use other esters of nitric acid such as erythritol tetranitrate, mannitol hexanitrate, PETN and other similar derivatives instead of NG for this purpose. These nitric acid esters being crystalline, are not assimilated readily and therefore, act more slowly but produce a longer lasting effect. 

It is not unreasonable to expect preparatively useful photoreactions of appropriately functionalized dihalocyclopropanes also. Although the present trend in gew-dihalocyclopropane chemistry clearly favors the use of more highly functionalized substrates, the traditional role — mentioned in the introduction — of employing these strained molecules in hydrocarbon synthesis, is by no means an approach of the past. This point is stressed by the recent synthesis of octavalene... 

The inclusion of reactions under this heading is convenient merely for the purpose of formal classification it is not intended to suggest the mechanism by which the thiadiazoles arise. Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis still receives great interest. Special sections are devoted to the topic at regular symposia on natural-gas conversion,487-489 a journal special issues have been published,490 and there are papers on Fischer-Tropsch technologies,490"495 and an analysis of present trends.496 Two reviews about mechanistic studies497 and the kinetics and the selectivities of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis498 are available. A few significant new findings are collected here. 

Instruments can be classified into two major categories those which measure several elements sequentially or simultaneously. Present trends favour systems with fixed optics delivering turnkey solutions to defined applications. 

Although a number of papers are devoted exclusively to IR and Raman studies of oxygen heterocycles, the present trend is to incorporate such spectroscopic data with other aspects of their chemistry. Much of the earlier work has been summarized (63PMH(2)242,71PMH(4)339) and many of the papers referred to in Chapters 2.23 and 2.24 include IR data which it has not been possible to cover in the present account. 

Another interesting recent development in styrene technology which will affect future consumption of ethylene relates to new methods for increasing conversion in the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. The future work on the poisoning of automotive catalysts will have to deal, primarily, with the specific interaction of particular poisons with the active components. The present trend toward more complex catalytic systems, containing several active components, will make the task still more difficult. One could foresee the use of modem, more sophisticated methods of surface analysis for studying the interactions between poison and active components.
