Water in Dust Settlement.—In nearly every case where water can be used it has a beneficial effect. It is of much assistance in the Cottrell process of dust settlement to be described later. The more finely divided the water, the less need be the amount used but that the effect is somewhat independent of the quantity, that is that a large quantity in bulk will do effective work is shown by the experiments of Iles. Jets of water were allowed to flow down through a tin box with slightly inclined alternate shelves so as to give the water a tortuous course. From 90 to 95 per cent of the smoke and fume was collected from the gas ascending the box. Humidifying can be accomplished by nozzles or by centrifugal apparatus, which whirls the water into an impalpable mist.

The complete filtration apparatus is shown in Fig. 5, p. 11. A simpler and cheaper apparatus is shown in Fig. 45. This consists of a boiling-tube A having a side-arm for connection to the pump the tube A is conveniently held in a wooden or cork block B or in a clamp. The funnel F may be fitted into A through a pliable rubber disc D the latter is more useful than a cork since it covers tubes of various diameters. The filtrate is collected in the centrifuge-tube T. 

A second type of apparatus based on the pressure diffusion effect is the separation nozzle. Pressure gradients in a curved expanding jet produce an isotopic separation similar to that in a centrifuge. The separation effect obtained with a single jet is relatively small, and separation nozzle stages, similar to gaseous diffusion stages, must be used in a cascade to realize most of the desired separations. 

Planetary Ball Milling This is a method of increasing the gravitational force acting on balls in a ball mill. For example, refractoiy metals and carbides can be ground to 1 to 2.6 [Lm in 5 to 20 min in an apparatus capable of applying a centrifugal force of 10 to 50 G. [Dobrovol sldi, Poroshk. MetalL, 7(6), 1-7 (1967)]. 

Epoxy-5,6,7.8-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethylenenaphthalene-2,3-dicarbonitrile(0.50 g, 2.2 mmol), Ni(OAc)2 (0.14g, 1.1 mmol), and 7 drops of DBU, in pentan-l-ol (lOmL) were heated to 140 C for 16h under N2. The cooled solution was poured into MeOH (50mL) and the precipitate formed was centrifuged, dried, and put into a Soxhlct apparatus. After the product had been extracted for several days with MeOH, the dark-green powder was dried in vacuo at 100 C yield 0.19 g (36%).

The analysis demonstrates the elegant use of a very specific type of column packing. As a result, there is no sample preparation, so after the serum has been filtered or centrifuged, which is a precautionary measure to protect the apparatus, 10 p.1 of serum is injected directly on to the column. The separation obtained is shown in figure 13. The stationary phase, as described by Supelco, was a silica based material with a polymeric surface containing dispersive areas surrounded by a polar network. Small molecules can penetrate the polar network and interact with the dispersive areas and be retained, whereas the larger molecules, such as proteins, cannot reach the interactive surface and are thus rapidly eluted from the column. The chemical nature of the material is not clear, but it can be assumed that the dispersive surface where interaction with the small molecules can take place probably contains hydrocarbon chains like a reversed phase.
