As an example, in a material with = 100 and 8, = 1 x 10 (absolute p = An X 10 H/m and e = 8.854 x 10 F/m, respectively), the propagation velocity is 3 x 10 m/s. When a signal of / = 15 MHz propagates through this medium, dimensional resonance can be established if the solid has a dimension comparable to half the wavelength, A/2 = 3 x 10 (m/s)/(2 X 15 X 10 (1/s)) = 1 cm. At this resonance condition the apparent permeability vanishes. To avoid dimensional resonance, antenna rods are designed with a ribbed cross-section, which limits the resonance conditions to a small fraction of the rod. [Pg.199]

Ferrite thin films can be included in integrated circuits where an inductor is required. A metallic coil is deposited on an epitaxial YIG film by sputtering, with a meander pattern. To increase the effective inductance value, a second ferrite film is placed on top of the coil, in a sandwich configuration (Arai et al, 1991). Plating techniques (see Section 3.6.3) have also been used to deposit ferrite thin films on GaAs integrated circuits (Abe et al, 1988). [Pg.199]

A particular application requiring soft ferrites that has rapidly grown in importance in the last few years is power supplies for computers, peripherals and small instruments. A compact and efficient power unit can be obtained by using a technique known as switched-mode power supply (SMPS). It may seem peculiar that in this technique, involving a dc to dc conversion, one of the key elements is a high-frequency transformer. [Pg.199]

In the switched-mode technique, the mains power signal is rectified and smoothed it is then switched as rectangular pulses at a frequency of 25 kHz into a ferrite transformer to obtain the desired voltage finally, it is rectified and smoothed to provide the required power to the instrument. The combination of modem transistor switching circuits with [Pg.199]

TV deflection yokes are used in display monitors to focus electrons through the interaction with a strong magnetic field, and create an image on the screen. The requirements for the ferrite element in yokes are similar to those for high-frequency transformers since the image resolution has a direct relation with the frequency needed in the horizontal scanning. A resolution of 2.5 x 10 pixels is achieved with a horizontal frequency of [Pg.200]

A New Series of Metal-Ceramie X-Ray Tubes for Low Power Applications. [Pg.532]

The new design introduced here may help to overcome this restriction by making the advantages of this technology affordable for lower power applications. [Pg.532]

A powerful application of outer-sphere electron transfer theory relates the ET rate between D and A to the rates of self exchange for the individual species. Self-exchange rates correspond to electron transfer in D/D (/cjj) and A/A (/c22)- These rates are related through the cross-relation to the D/A electron transfer reaction by the expression... [Pg.2983]

Concerns about global climate change have motivated new interest in low-carbon or noncarbon fuels. Recent rapid progress and industrial interest in low-temperature fuel cells (which prefer hydrogen as a fuel) for transportation and power applications have also led to a reexamination of hydrogen as a fuel. [Pg.653]

There also are circumstances where income tax provisions reduce the after-tax rate of return on such investments below those available in other sectors. For example, certain types of electricity-generating property (such as those used in distributed power applications) may have useful lives that are substantially shorter than the tax lives permitted for cost recovery. In such instances, the after-tax rate of return will be negatively affected by these specific provisions. [Pg.1121]

In nearly all mechanical power applications in the oil and gas industry it is necessary to transmit the power generated by a prime mover to an operation (e.g., drawworks of a drilling rig, or a production pumping system). The transmission of rotary power to such operation elements is carried out by a power transmission system. Mechanical power transmission is typically carried out by power betting systems, chain systems, gear systems and by hydraulic systems, or some combination of these three [1,5]. [Pg.420]

Focusing on the concept of the completely sealed system, the Sanyo Electric Co. developed sealed-type nickel-cadmium batteries in 1961. This type of battery enjoys a wide application range that is still expanding a large variety of nickel-cadmium batteries has been developed to meet user needs ranging from low-current uses like emergency power sources and semiconductor memories to high-power applications such as cordless drills. [Pg.23]

Object.—Quantum statistics was discussed briefly in Chapter 12 of The Mathematics of Physics and Chemistry, and as far as elementary treatments of quantum statistics are concerned,1 that introductory discussion remains adequate. In recent years, however, a spectacular development of quantum field theory has presented us with new mathematical tools of great power, applicable at once to the problems of quantum statistics. This chapter is devoted to an exposition of the mathematical formalism of quantum field theory as it has been adapted to the discussion of quantum statistics. The entire structure is based on the concepts of Hilbert space, and we shall devote a considerable fraction of the chapter to these concepts. [Pg.426]

This list is by no means exhaustive. Many other amines have been employed from time to time, and novel materials are occasionally tested under high temperature conditions to control problems specific to critical units, especially in PWR secondary cycles and other power applications. [Pg.520]

The Johnsonfigure of merit, based on saturated carrier velocity and dielectric strength (product of power x frequency squared x impedance), predicts the suitability of a material for high power applications. It is normalized with the value of one given to silicon. As shown in Table 13.2 below, diamond is clearly the preferred material on this basis. [Pg.352]

Fiber laser guide star systems. It is now widely appreciated that the heat- dissipation characteristics of fibers, coupled with the high efficiencies demonstrated (> 80%) and excellent spatial mode characteristics, make fiber lasers a preferred candidate for many high power applications. Based on these features, fiber laser technologies would provide a compact, efficient, robust, turnkey laser source, ideally suited for LGS applications. [Pg.244]
