Many familiar heal transfer application. involve natural convection as the primary mechanism of heat transfer. Some examples are cooling of electronic equipment such as power transistors, TVs, and DVDs heat transfer from electric baseboard heaters or steam radiators heat transfer from the refrigeration coils and power transmission lines and heat transfer from the bodies of animals and human beings. Natural convection in gases is usually accompanied by radiation of comparable magnitude except for low-emissivity surfaces. [Pg.521]

Abrasion is usually a major consideration in pump selection. Except for the mild chemical-type duties already referred to, slurry pumps are of special construction, essentially to resist abrasion to the pump and its shaft seals but often also to permit fast maintenance and liner or component replacement for very abrasive duties. Generally either replaceable rubber lining or specially hard abrasion-resistant alloys are used shaft seals are of special design, and are usually continually flushed with clean water. Impeller tip velocities are kept within proven limits for the application. Power transmission is often through V-belts rather than direct-drive couplings, to permit exactly the required speed to be obtained (rather than synchronous speeds) and to permit speed optimization in service (varying the impeller diameter is not so convenient). [Pg.187]

The electrical conductivity of aluminium is around two-thirds that of copper, which it is replacing in many electrical applications. Overhead power transmission lines made of aluminium or aluminium alloy of the Almelec type, on the market in France since 1927 [2] are used throughout the world. Aluminium bars and tubes are also widely used in connecting stations for high- and medium-voltage outdoor networks. [Pg.12]

Application of series capacitors and analysis of an uncompensated transmission line and the capability of power transfer and system regulation with and without series compensation are also presented. [Pg.990]

The other approach to the reduction of the power loss to the dielectric material is by reducing the amount used. This is done by replacing part of the dielectric by air, an inert gas, or by vacuum. As examples there are three cable constructions in common use which employ these approaches to minimize dielectric loss. The first is the use of a foamed dielectric PS plastic that is commonly used in either twin lead transmission lines or in coaxial cables used for antenna lead-in wires in the UHF-TV antenna applications. The second system, which is illustrative of several sectional spacers, is used widely in communications cables of the coaxial type to minimize losses to the dielectric by reducing the amount of dielectric material in the cable. [Pg.225]

High power microwaves are generated by vacuum tubes. The magnetron and klystron are the most commonly used tubes for the generation of continuous waves power for microwave processing. Power is normally launched from the microwave tube into a transmission line or waveguide, where it travels to a load or termination such an antenna or a microwave heating applicator. [Pg.20]

The previous chapters address various aspects of quantitative bond graph-based FDI and system mode identification for systems represented by a hybrid model. This chapter illustrates applications of the presented methods by means of a number of small case studies. The examples chosen are widely used switched power electronic systems. Various kinds of electronic power converters, e.g. buck- or boost converters, or DC to AC converters are used in a variety of applications such as DC power supplies for electronic equipment, battery chargers, motor drives, or high voltage direct current transmission line systems [1]. [Pg.163]

The incompressibility of liquids is utilised in many ways in industry particularly in hydraulic power transmission. Two common applications are as power sources for machines and vehicles and in hydraulic cylinders. Normally the hydraulic medium is an oil and hazards can arise where leaks occur either as oil pools on a floor or from high-pressure lines as a fine mist which is highly flammable. [Pg.491]
