Applications solar power

The need for long-term clean power will be a controversial but necessary issue in the twenty-first cen-tuity. The debate will focus on the deregulation of the power industity and the needs of consumers, coupled with what is best for the environment. For certain applications, solar technology has proven to be efficient and reliable. The question remains whether solar will be wholly embraced as energy options for a sustainable future m a climate of cheap fossil fuels and less than enthusiastic public support. 

Cells made from GaAs are more costly than silicon cells, because the production process is not as well developed, and gallium and arsenic are not abundant materials. GaAs cells have been used when very high efficiency is needed regardless of cost such as required in space applications. They were also used in the Sunraycer, a photovoltaic-powered electric car, which won the Pentax World Solar Challenge race for solar-powered vehicles in 1987. Naturally, the burden is much greater on the applicant where the utility being asserted is incredible by its very nature (e.g., solar powered, anti-gravity, pull yourself up and fly by your own bootstrap boots ). In such an instance, the evidence put forward by the applicant must be sufficient to satisfy the hypothetical jury of persons having ordinary skill in the art that the claimed invention is likely to demonstrate sufficient utility. Please appreciate, however, that the claimed invention need not be safe, it need not be the best, it need not even be very good at all.

In large-scale applications (Figure 1.36 top left), the solar power generators are often connected to the electric grid in the area. The shown PV power plant capacity is 2 mW, and the plant is located near a defunct nuclear power plant. 

In thermal solar power plants, high-temperature oil flows need to be controlled in hydrogen processes, very-low-temperature LH2 flows have to be controlled. For these reasons, the emphasis in this treatment will be on control valve designs that are suited for these applications and on phenomena (such as noise and cavitation) that are common in these applications.
