Post-filter

In the most common production method, the semibatch process, about 10% of the preemulsified monomer is added to the deionised water in the reactor. A shot of initiator is added to the reactor to create the seed. Some manufacturers use master batches of seed to avoid variation in this step. Having set the number of particles in the pot, the remaining monomer and, in some cases, additional initiator are added over time. Typical feed times ate 1—4 h. Lengthening the feeds tempers heat generation and provides for uniform comonomer sequence distributions (67). Sometimes skewed monomer feeds are used to offset differences in monomer reactivity ratios. In some cases a second monomer charge is made to produce core—shell latices. At the end of the process pH adjustments are often made. The product is then pumped to a prefilter tank, filtered, and pumped to a post-filter tank where additional processing can occur. When the feed rate of monomer during semibatch production is very low, the reactor is said to be monomer starved. Under these... [Pg.26]

Method 2. Saturation Method for Sequential Pumping. In this method, atomic fluorescence of the inorganic probe is produced at 3+1 and at 3+2 after excitation at 1+3 and/or 2+3 respectively. However, in this case, it is necessary to "saturate" the excited level, 3, in order to use the methodic In addition, in order for the flame temperature to be evaluated it is necessary for the mixing first order rate constant, k2i, between the metastable, 2, and ground state, 1, to be much greater (> 20X) than the sum of the total deactivation rate constants between levels 3 and 1 and also between 3 and 2. This method also requires calibration of the spectrometric measurement system, saturation of level 3, corrections or minimization of scatter and post filter effects, and beam matching of 2 dye laser beams are needed for the excitation process. [Pg.200]

Cheminformatics methods are required to design screening libraries, enrich existing libraries, select diverse or focused subsets, and pre- or post-filter undesired or reactive compounds. At present more than 10 million unique compounds are commercially available for screening (http //www.emolecules.com/, http //www.chemnavigator.com) and the theoretical number of synthetically tractable compounds even with lead-like properties is enormous (Bleicher et al., 2003 Fink, Bruggesser, and Reymond, 2005). [Pg.255]

Spectrex PC 50 Partascope vicw ei consists of a small, battery-operated "Black Box" which internally generates two parallel, scanning laser beams. Samples of water, oil or other liquid are introduced by beaker or bottle. Through Fraunhofer diffraction, particles in suspension, as small as 1 pm diameter, are made visible directly to the human eye. The two laser beams permit comparison of a sample with standards, or of pre- and post-filter samples. [Pg.491]

Figure 1 summarizes the most common modes of carbon use in water treatment. While replecement of sand by GAC in conventional filter plants may be satisfactory for taste and odor removal and general organic reduction, there is some concern that the contact time (approximately 8—10 minutes) associated with traditional 304nch deep filter beds may be insufficient for obtaining acceptable removal of to.xic and otherwise potentially hazardous organic substances [12—14 ], and that post-filter contactor columns may therefore be required in some applications. [Pg.463]

Note that the very existence of the RHP zero in the boost and buck-boost can be traced back to the fact that these are the only topologies where an actual LC post-filter doesn t exist on the output. Though, by using the canonical modeling technique, we have managed to create an effective LC post filter, the fact that in reality there is a switch/diode connected between the actual L and C of the topology, is what is ultimately responsible for creating the RHP zero. [Pg.287]

Activated carbon, in powdered (PAC) or granular (GAC) form, has many applications in drinking water treatment. It can be used for removing taste and odor (T O) compoimds, synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs), and dissolved natural ot] nic matter (DOM) from water. PAC typically has a diameter less than 0.15 mm, and can be applied at various locations in a treatment system (Fig. 1). GAC, with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mm, is employed in fixed-bed adsorbers such as granular media filters or post filters. Despite difference in particle size, the adsorption properties of PAC and GAC are fundamentally the same because the characteristics of activated carbon (pore size distribution, internal surface area and smface chemistry) controlling the equilibrium aspects of adsorption are independent of particle size. However, particle size impacts adsorption kinetics. [Pg.345]

Another factor is that insufficient contact time to approach equihbrium is generally provided in a drinking water treatment plant for PAG. Specifically, contact times of 2-4 h are generally provided, whereas, approaching equihbrium may take up to 4-5 d for PAG. On the other hand, GAG on GAG-capped filters or post-filter contactors does come nearly to equihbrium. For these reasons (i.e., more favorable equilibriiun capacity, and closer approach to equihbrium), GAG has the potential to provide significantly more effective treatment for difficult to treat transformation products (as well as parent synthetic organic chemicals) in drinking water treatment plants. [Pg.166]

Overall scheme. The overall scheme of the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. The polydisperse polymer sample was applied to the centrifuge tube as a narrow band and was separated by centrifugation. The separated distribution was then forced slowly through a post-filter, the UV detector, and the light-scattering detector. The UV and LALLS electrical signals were sent to a computer, which computed M from Eq. 2 at each of about 80 points in the distribution and plotted or tabulated the results. [Pg.218]
