Styrene [100-42-5] (phenylethene, viaylben2ene, phenylethylene, styrol, cinnamene), CgH5CH=CH2, is the simplest and by far the most important member of a series of aromatic monomers. Also known commercially as styrene monomer (SM), styrene is produced in large quantities for polymerization. It is a versatile monomer extensively used for the manufacture of plastics, including crystalline polystyrene, mbber-modifted impact polystyrene, expandable polystyrene, acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene copolymer (ABS), styrene—acrylonitrile resins (SAN), styrene—butadiene latex, styrene—butadiene mbber (qv) (SBR), and unsaturated polyester resins (see Acrylonithile polya rs Styrene plastics). [Pg.476]

Polymeric particles can be constructed from a number of different monomers or copolymer combinations. Some of the more common ones include polystyrene (traditional latex particles), poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) copolymers, poly(styrene/acrylate) copolymers, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA), poly(vinyltoluene), poly(styrene/butadiene) copolymers, and poly(styrene/vinyltoluene) copolymers. In addition, by mixing into the polymerization reaction combinations of functional monomers, one can create reactive or functional groups on the particle surface for subsequent coupling to affinity ligands. One example of this is a poly(styrene/acrylate) copolymer particle, which creates carboxylate groups within the polymer structure, the number of which is dependent on the ratio of monomers used in the polymerization process. [Pg.583]

Butadiene is used primarily in the production of synthetic rubbers, including styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), polybutadiene nibber (BR), styrene-butadiene latex (SBL), chloroprene rubber (CR) and nitrile rubber (NR). Important plastics containing butadiene as a monomeric component are shock-resistant polystyrene, a two-phase system consisting of polystyrene and polybutadiene ABS polymers consisting of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene and a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, butadiene and styrene (MBS), which is used as a modifier for poly(vinyl chloride). It is also used as an intermediate in the production of chloroprene, adiponitrile and other basic petrochemicals. The worldwide use pattern for butadiene in 1981 was as follows (%) SBR + SBL, 56 BR, 22 CR, 6 NR, 4 ABS, 4 hexamethylenediamine, 4 other, 4. The use pattern for butadiene in the United States in 1995 was (%) SBR, 31 BR, 24 SBL, 13 CR, 4 ABS, 5 NR, 2 adiponitrile, 12 and other, 9 (Anon., 1996b). [Pg.114]

Figures 3A, 3B, and 3C show the ultra-thin cross-sections of OsOi+-stained two-stage (styrene//styrene-butadiene) latex particles at the stage ratio of 20/80, whose S/B ratios in the second stage are 70/30 (LS-7), 90/10 (LS-8), and 95/5 (LS-9), respectively. It can be seen from the micrographs that the size of polystyrene phase domains decreases with decreasing butadiene level in the second-stage S-B copolymers and becomes so small at the S/B ratio... Effects of Detector Response Function. Two synthetic blends were made using three of the polystyrene latices (91 nm, 176 nm and 1091 nm). A sample of commercially available acrylic latex and one of butadiene latex were obtained and diluted with eluant. The two blends and two commercial samples were each analyzed using the FlowSizer with each of two different detector response functions. [Pg.263]

Styrene is produced by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene followed by catalytic dehydrogenation. High impact polystyrene (HIPS) is synthesized by emulsion polymerization of styrene in styrene-butadiene latex. The higher impact characteristics of HIPS make it suitable for use in the manufacture of sheets, food containers, window frames, household goods, etc. [Pg.11]

Ethylbenzene (eth-il-BEN-zeen) is a colorless flammable liquid with a pleasant aromatic odor. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon, that is, a compound consisting of carbon and hydrogen only with a molecular structure similar to that of benzene (C6H6). In 3004 it ranked fifteenth among chemicals produced in the United States. Its primary use is in the manufacture of another aromatic hydrocarbon, styrene (C6HSCH=CH2), widely used to make a number of polymers, such as polystyrene, styrene-butadiene latex, SBR rubber, and ABS rubber. [Pg.303]

Uses. Plastics and synthetic rubber are the major uses for styrene. They account for the exponential growth from a few million pounds per year in 1938 to more than 8 billion pounds today. The numerous plastics include polystyrene, styrenated polyesters, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), and styrene-butadiene (SB). Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) was a landmark chemical achievement when it was comrner-cialized during World War II. The styrene derivatives are found everywhere—in food-grade film, coys, construction pipe, foam, boats, latex paints, tires, luggage, and furniture. [Pg.131]

While vinyl acetate is normally polymerized in batch or continuous stirred tank reactors, continuous reactors offer the possibility of better heat transfer and more uniform quality. Tubular reactors have been used to produce polystyrene by a mass process (1, 2), and to produce emulsion polymers from styrene and styrene-butadiene (3 -6). The use of mixed emulsifiers to produce mono-disperse latexes has been applied to polyvinyl toluene (5). Dunn and Taylor have proposed that nucleation in seeded vinyl acetate emulsion is prevented by entrapment of oligomeric radicals by the seed particles (6j. Because of the solubility of vinyl acetate in water, Smith -Ewart kinetics (case 2) does not seem to apply, but the kinetic models developed by Ugelstad (7J and Friis (8 ) seem to be more appropriate. [Pg.561]

Information on particle growth during either a seeded polymerization or during the growth stage of an un-seeded polymerization at different degrees of conversion also could enhance the understanding of the kinetics. In earlier work (4,5) the rate of polymerization, for polystyrene latexes primarily, has been related to the latex particle diameter and the total number of particles in the reactor. It would be useful to obtain kinetic data and develop the kinetic relationships for styrene (S)-butadiene (B) latexes. [Pg.272]

The free-radical kinetics described in Chapter 6 hold for homogeneous systems. They will prevail in well-stirred bulk or solution polymerizations or in suspension polymerizations if the polymer is soluble in its monomer. Polystyrene suspension polymerization is an important commercial example of this reaction type. Suspension polymerizations of vinyl ehloride and of acrylonitrile are described by somewhat different kinetic schemes because the polymers precipitate in these cases. Emulsion polymerizations aie controlled by still different reaetion parameters because the growing macroradicals are isolated in small volume elements and because the free radieals which initiate the polymerization process are generated in the aqueous phase. The emulsion process is now used to make large tonnages of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), latex paints and adhesives, PVC paste polymers, and other produets. [Pg.281]
