Polymeric composite materials

Lately, polymeric composite materials have found a wide recognition thanks to their unique qualities /1,2/. But use of the materials for construction, is limited, because lack of reliable diagnostic facilities. The non-destructive control method (NC), based on the acoustic emission phenomenon (AE), might offer a prospective solution to the situation. [Pg.83]

Development of an assortment of polymeric composite materials, decisions concerning their possible scope of applicability and service conditions involve research into a very broad circle of problems ... [Pg.3]

There is currently considerable interest in processing polymeric composite materials filled with nanosized rigid particles. This class of material called "nanocomposites" describes two-phase materials where one of the phases has at least one dimension lower than 100 nm [13]. Because the building blocks of nanocomposites are of nanoscale, they have an enormous interface area. Due to this there are a lot of interfaces between two intermixed phases compared to usual microcomposites. In addition to this, the mean distance between the particles is also smaller due to their small size which favors filler-filler interactions [14]. Nanomaterials not only include metallic, bimetallic and metal oxide but also polymeric nanoparticles as well as advanced materials like carbon nanotubes and dendrimers. However considering environmetal hazards, research has been focused on various means which form the basis of green nanotechnology. [Pg.119]

Polymer resins were first introduced in the early 1940s as an aesthetic alternative to repair defects in anterior teeth. Some of the first resins were unfilled polymers of methyl methacrylate. Presently, these unfilled resins have been replaced by filled composite materials that limit the problems associated with polymerization volume shrinkage, abrasion or wear resistance, mechanical properties, water sorption, solubility, and thermal expansion. Polymeric composite materials generally consist of a monomer resin, a ceramic filler, a polymerization initiator or initiating system, and a coupling agent which binds the polymer... [Pg.180]

The typical spiral-wound membrane, as shown in Figure 4.20, consists of four layers wrapped around a central collection pipe membrane, spacer (providing a permeate channel), membrane, and a new spacer (providing a feed channel). The feed-side spacer acts as a turbulence promotor, whereas on the permeate side the flow is directed toward the central pipe. The spiral-wound membrane will typically be a polymeric composite material, and is much used also for liquid separation. The packing density of this type of module will depend on the channel height, but is usually within the range of 300-1000 m /m [1]. Several modules may be assembled in one pressure vessel. [Pg.89]

When the molecular weight (Mw) values of the polymeric composite material are compared with those of the polymeric product obtained from the irradiation of the monomer alone at the same irradiation time and concentration of the monomer, a 20% reduction is detected. This can be ascribed to the influence of the iron on the growth of the polymer. This would mean that the recombination of the iron... [Pg.125]

Perspective course in the case of creation new polymeric composite materials is combining of two or more various high-molecular compounds. This principle may be realized by dissolution or swelling of polymer component in monomer and further polymerization of the last. The diversity of possible polymer-monomer combinations permits to vary a wide range of compounds structure and properties. The employment of such systems makes it possible to design materials with a new complex of characteristics [1, 2, 3],... [Pg.147]

Reduction of the vapor transmittance of latex films as a result of vibrowave influences on the latex, measured by diffusion method, also confirms the change of a film structure under the influence of nonlinear vibrations [8], It is necessary to emphasize, that the influence of vibrowave treatment observed already at a stage of synthesis of polymers [14] is efficient at the subsequent stages of formation of a complex of properties of polymeric composite materials. [Pg.375]

If two or more types of different materials are mixed up and treated in defined conditions (varying with temperature, pressure, and other chemical and physical processes), a composite material with a clear interfacial boundary will be obtained. If a major part of the produced composite consists of polymer, then it is called a polymeric composite. A polymeric composite material is one of the most developed areas of modern science and technology. In addition to composite materials, modern science and technology use nano-sized materials. Such composites are called nanocomposites, whose main attraction is related to very high operation properties, such as flexibility, elasticity, recycling, hardness, resistance to abrasion, and optical and electrical transmission [9]. [Pg.930]

Against this background, attempts were made to improve the properties of produced polymeric composite materials by use of the new nanosized materials. [Pg.335]
