Most studies related to this chapter were carried out at Central Research Laboratories, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd and at the Institute for Polymers and Organic Solids, University of California, Santa Barbara and in the Quantum Wave Project, one of the research programs of Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO) in the Research Development Corporation of Japan (JRDC). 

MITI is currently undergoing research to develop technology for the recycling of non-flammable plastics such as those used in business machines and computers. Their National Institute for Resources and Environment plans to decompose, without the production of harmful substances, non-flammable polymers by means of liquid phase hydrocracking, and to recover from them light oils such as benzene, toluene and xylene. The key to the technology, it is claimed, lies in the development of a catalyst which will be able to combine hazardous substances such as bromine and chlorine contained in the waste plastics.

Professor Wegner was one of the founders of the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research in 1983. He was instrumental in making the Institute an internationally recognized organization in polymer science research, largely by his excellent academic and administrative efforts. He is now the vice-president of the Max-Planck Society. 

During the late 1990s, Dr. Nastruzzi worked with Professor P. L. Luisi as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Polymers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ferrara, he focused on the production and characterization of liposomes specially designed for retinoid delivery, as well as on biophysical studies and activity of in vitro cultured cell lines. In 1991, he obtained a researcher position in this department, where he devoted his energy to the production of microspheres, liposomes, and microemulsions for the controlled delivery of biological response modifiers.
