Polyethylene substrates

A polyvinylpyrrolidone coating was also applied to polyethylene pretreated in a cold O2 plasma (RF, 20 L, SOW, 10 min). The plasma treatment induces the attachment of alcohol and ketone groups, and therefore a hydrophilic character develops. Then, the plasma-modified polyethylene substrate is dipped into an aqueous solution of PVP (Kollidon 90 pharmaceutical grade, molecular weight 90 000 Da). A new, stable, hydrophilic substrate is obtained. [Pg.184]

From Tables 7.7 and 7.8, it can be forecast that epoxy adhesives will wet clean aluminum or copper surfaces. However, epoxy resin will not wet a substrate having a critical surface tension significantly less than 47 dynes/cm. Epoxies will not, for example, wet either a metal surface contaminated with silicone oil or a clean polyethylene substrate. [Pg.430]

All of the results described above were obtained with mobile carrier membranes. Another type of membrane was prepared by grafting 2-(N,N-dimethyl)aminoethyl methacrylate (DAMA) onto a microporous polyethylene substrate (PEI). The relationship between the degree of DAMA-grafting and the grafting time is shown in Figure 2. Osada et al. reported that DAMA done could not be graft-polymerized on a porous substrate by the low temperature plasma technique and that the Edition of the easily graftable monomer, such as acrylic acid (AA) to DAMA, was necessary to... [Pg.263]

We also prepared a new membrane with an amine moiety by plasma-grafting DAMA onto a microporous polyethylene substrate. The membrane obtained is suggested to act as a fixed carrier membrane for CO2 facilitated transport in dry conditions and as a fixed reaction site membrane in wet conditions. [Pg.268]

In this study, poly(acrylic acid) (poly(AA)), poly(acrylic acid-co-vinylsuHonic acid) (poly(AAVS)) or poly(acrylamide tert-butyl sulfonic acid) (poly(ATBS)) was used as the filUng polymer, and porous polytetrafluoroethylene (FI FE) [17, 18], porous cross-linked high-density polyethylene substrate (CLPE) or a porous polyimide substrate (PI) was used as the substrate. Polyacrylic acid is a weak acid and the poly(AAVS) copolymer has a sulfonic acid group of 0.7 nunol g" -polymer, because the vinylsulfonic acid content in the copolymer is 5 mol%. Poly(ATBS) has a 4.5 mmol g -polymer sulfonic acid content. [Pg.388]

Ecolyte later developed a masterbatch process for polyethylene in which MIPK was grafted to a low-density polyethylene substrate. This was produced for agricultural applications and the film was produced by Atlantic Packaging Limited of Toronto. The plastic film was sold mainly for farms in Florida growing melons and tomatoes. Atlantic found it difficult to compete with local producers who used recycled material. The masterbatch was later also marketed by Eco Atlantic in Baltimore, Maryland. [Pg.433]

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis A ThermoNicolet Nexus 470 spectrometer was used for FTIR analysis to detect the presence of functional groups in the membranes. Thin membrane samples were attached to a polyethylene substrate FTIR card from Thermo Electron Cotp. and analyzed at ambient temperature. All spectra were obtained from 100 scans at 4.0 cm resolution with spectra ranging from 400 to 4000 cm. ... [Pg.196]
