Figures 4.1 la and b, respectively, are examples of dark-field and direct transmission electron micrographs of polyethylene crystals. The ability of dark-field imaging to distinguish between features of the object which differ in orientation is apparent in Fig. 4.11a. The effect of shadowing is evident in Fig. 4.11b, where those edges of the crystal which cast the shadows display sharper contrast. BiaxiaHy oriented films have excellent tensile strength properties and good tear and impact properties. They are especially well regarded for their brilliance and clarity. Essentially all poly(ethylene terephthalate) film is biaxiaHy oriented, and more than 80% of polypropylene film is biaxiaHy oriented. Polystyrene film is oriented, and a lesser amount of polyethylene, polyamide, poly(vinyl chloride), and other polymers are so processed. Some of the specialty films, like polyimides (qv), are also oriented. [Pg.381]

Hard baked goods such as cookies and crackers have a relatively low water and high fat content. Water can be absorbed, and the product loses its desirable texture and becomes subject to Hpid rancidity. Packagiag for cookies and crackers includes polyolefin-coextmsion film pouches within paperboard carton sheUs, and polystyrene trays overwrapped with polyethylene or oriented polypropylene film. Soft cookies are packaged in high water-vapor-barrier laminations containing aluminum foil. [Pg.449]

Extmsion of polyethylene and some polypropylenes is usually through a circular die into a tubular form, which is cut and collapsed into flat film. Extmsion through a linear slot onto chilled rollers is called casting and is often used for polypropylene, polyester, and other resins. Cast, as well as some blown, films may be further heated and stretched in the machine or in transverse directions to orient the polymer within the film and improve physical properties such as tensile strength, stiffness, and low temperature resistance. [Pg.453]

A small quantity of flexible packaging material, usually oriented polypropylene, shrink polypropylene, or polyethylene, is used to overwrap paperboard cartons. The film is wrapped around the carton and sealed by heating. Products such as boxed chocolates, candies, and cookies are overwrapped, sometimes by a printed film. [Pg.453]

The properties of elastomeric materials are also greatly iafluenced by the presence of strong interchain, ie, iatermolecular, forces which can result ia the formation of crystalline domains. Thus the elastomeric properties are those of an amorphous material having weak interchain iateractions and hence no crystallisation. At the other extreme of polymer properties are fiber-forming polymers, such as nylon, which when properly oriented lead to the formation of permanent, crystalline fibers. In between these two extremes is a whole range of polymers, from purely amorphous elastomers to partially crystalline plastics, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonates, etc. [Pg.466]

Sheet molding compound (SMC) consists of randomly oriented chopped fibers in a matrix of resin and filler. SMC is produced in the continuous manner shown in Figure 1-16. Note that the polyethylene film protects the roller system from getting gummed up with the resin-filler paste. The rug-like rolls of SMC are then used in compression molding machines to create large parts such as the sides of cars and trucks. [Pg.22]

Fibers are thin threads produced by extruding a molten polymer through small holes in a die, or spinneret. The fibers are then cooled and drawn out, which orients the crystallite regions along the axis of the fiber and adds considerable tensile strength (Figure 31.3). Nylon, Dacron, and polyethylene all have the semicrystalline structure necessary for drawing into oriented fibers. [Pg.1216]
