Even more rapid curing can be achieved if unsaturated polyester coatings are replaced by the more expensive unsaturated acrylic coatings. Instead of a polyester resin, a low molecular weight acrylic polymer is used, often called an oligomer. These acrylic oligomers are the reaction products of acrylic acid and end groups in epoxy resins and saturated polyesters, or of hydroxy monomers, such as hydroxyethyl acrylate, and polyisocyanates, e.g. [Pg.213]

The unsaturated polyester coatings of the type earlier described are nowadays mostly replaced with other resin types of lower viscosity. Instead of an unsaturated polyester resin, lower molecular weight polymers may be used, often called acrylic oligomers. These oligomers are for example the reaction products of acrylic acid and end groups in epoxy resins (epoxy acrylates) and in saturated polyesters (polyester acrylates). The linking reactions are shown diagrammatically ... [Pg.246]

Aqueous polyester dispersions were used as primers for paper, paperboard and aluminium foil substrates in order to improve the adhesion of saturated polyester coatings. These primers increased the adhesion of the coatings from near zero to values well above the minimum acceptable range for most extrusion coated packaging applications. CANADA USA... [Pg.107]

Polyols. Several important polyhydric alcohols or polyols are made from formaldehyde. The principal ones include pentaerythritol, made from acetaldehyde and formaldehyde trimethylolpropane, made from -butyraldehyde and formaldehyde and neopentyl glycol, made from isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde. These polyols find use in the alkyd resin (qv) and synthetic lubricants markets. Pentaerythritol [115-77-5] is also used to produce rosin/tall oil esters and explosives (pentaerythritol tetranitrate). Trimethylolpropane [77-99-6] is also used in urethane coatings, polyurethane foams, and multiftmctional monomers. Neopentyl glycol [126-30-7] finds use in plastics produced from unsaturated polyester resins and in coatings based on saturated polyesters. [Pg.497]

Polyester polyols are based on saturated aHphatic or aromatic carboxyHc acids and diols or mixtures of diols. The carboxyHc acid of choice is adipic acid (qv) because of its favorable cost/performance ratio. For elastomers, linear polyester polyols of ca 2000 mol wt are preferred. Branched polyester polyols, formulated from higher functional glycols, are used for foam and coatings appHcations. Phthalates and terephthalates are also used. [Pg.347]

Powder coatings are formulated from the reaction product of trimethylolpropane and IPDI, blocked with caprolactam, and polyester polyols. The saturated polyester polyols are based on aromatic acid diols, neopentyl glycol, and trimellitic anhydride for further branching. To avoid the release of caprolactam in the curing reaction, systems based on IPDI dimer diols are used. [Pg.350]

After a de-nib, spray surfacer is applied to build up the film thickness before top-coating. The surfacer contains a high level of pigment and extender (at least 35% by volume) and frequently a saturated polyester resin with a melamine —or urea —formaldehyde crosslinker. The coating is applied at thicknesses up to 35 ftm and stoved for 20 min at 150-165°C. [Pg.627]

For this use, the preferred powders are based on acrylic, epoxy or polyester and epoxy resins. For best colour, epoxy resins are crosslinked with anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids in the straight epoxy coatings, or with saturated polyesters of high acid content in the epoxy-polyester type. Acrylics contain epoxide rings via, for example, glycidyl methacrylate (CH2=C(CH3) —CO—O—CHj—CH —CH2), and these groups crosslink... [Pg.632]

By depolymerizing PET waste with a polyol and subsequently condensing the oligomeric product with a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, polyester resins are produced which have wide industrial applications. Depending on the polyol and polycarboxylic acid or anhydride used, saturated resins, alkyd resins, or unsaturated resins are obtained. PET wastes have been used for the production of alkyd resins in water thinnable paints. The materials obtained from the reaction of PET with a mixture of fatty acids high in linoleic acid content and trimethylolethane have been used in the preparation of water-dispersible coatings. Products of the depolymerization of PET with trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol are used in the manufacture of high-solids paints. In the first step, PET is depolymerized with trimethylopropane and pentaerythritol at temperatures of 230-240°C. The final paint compositions contain 30-50% of PET depolymerization products.12... [Pg.530]

The best performing coatings were the vinyl ester, the bisphenol A epoxy cured with an aliphatic amine, and a novolac epoxy cured with a mixed aromatic/cycl oal i phati c amine. The saturated polyester, and a bisphenol A epoxy cured with a polyamide amine showed significant deterioration of the coating material in the acid, and corrosion of the underlying steel. Two types of novolac epoxies cured with aromatic amines showed intermediate performance. [Pg.82]

Branched saturated polyester from adipic acid, phthalic anhydride, neopentyl glycol and trimethyl olpropane was mixed with BPA/DC solution in 2-methoxyethanol/ xylene and diluted with ethyl acetoacetate. A thermohardening coating with high hardness and good adhesion on steel was obtained [136]. A similar coating composition consists of BPA/DC and a polyester from adipic and isophthalic acid, trimellitic anhydride, neo pentyl glycol and trimethylolpropane [137, 138]. [Pg.57]

Polyester resins possess premium performance properties such as exterior durability, gloss, flexibility hardness, color stability, and versatility of cure. Polyesters are used in product finishes for household appliances, food and beverage containers, aircraft and equipment, automotive primers and bake coats, metal furniture, and fixtures. For example, water-soluble saturated polyesters are used in industrial baking paints, and in combination with melamine resin. Polyesters can be formulated in high solids and waterborne formulations to meet the requirements for the low VOC coatings being mandated by the EPA. [Pg.223]
