Saturated polyester resins

The choice of diols depends on which properties the resin would get. Rigid and [Pg.864]

Most saturated polyester resins are produced in the melt phase. At temperatures of about 200-260°C and in the presence of a catalyst the diacids and the diols are esterified by removal of water. The high temperature during the synthesis is normally sufficient to remove the water efficiently from the reactor by distillation, under reduced or normal pressure. To remove the last percentages of water and to complete the reaction, a stronger vacuum is applied at the end of the reaction. [Pg.865]

After a de-nib, spray surfacer is applied to build up the film thickness before top-coating. The surfacer contains a high level of pigment and extender (at least 35% by volume) and frequently a saturated polyester resin with a melamine —or urea —formaldehyde crosslinker. The coating is applied at thicknesses up to 35 ftm and stoved for 20 min at 150-165°C. [Pg.627]

Spray methods for obtaining microspheres have a number of disadvantages. High temperatures and bulky and complicated equipment are needed moreover they pose fire and explosion hazards. Low temperature methods, such as using emulsified thermoplast solutions, saturated polyester resins in liquid heat carriers, or suspension polymerization, are preferable1,3S). [Pg.72]

Coil Coating. On account of their outstanding hardness-elasticity balance, good adhesion to metals, good application properties, and favorable cost, paints based on saturated polyester resins represent the most important system for coil coating. [Pg.55]

Glycol ethers have a flexibilizing action on saturated polyester resins that crosslink with melamine-formaldehyde resins some functional groups in the melamine resin are apparently blocked by the glycol ether. The flexibilization of paint films by retention of solvents occurs in copolymer paints and has been investigated by gas chromatography [14.232] and radiotracer methods [14.233]. Dry, hardened paint... [Pg.321]

Compared to aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons (DIN 51633) have a higher solvency for oils, castor oil, oil-modified alkyd resins, styrene-modfied oils and alkyd resins, saturated polyester resins, polystyrene, poly(vinyl ethers), polyacrylate and polymethacrylate esters. poly(vinyl acetate), vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymers, and many low-polarity resins. [Pg.351]

Cyclohexyl acetate [622-45-7] is very slightly miscible with water, but completely miscible with common organic solvents. Its solvency properties are comparable to those of amyl acetate. Cyclohexyl acetate dissolves oils, fats, resins, waxes, cellulose nitrate, cellulose tripropionate and acetobutyrate, alkyd resins, unsaturated and saturated polyester resins, phenolic resins and aminoplasts, poIy(vinyI chloride), vinyl chloride copolymers, poly(vinyl acetate), poly(vinyl ethers), epoxy resins, and acrylic resins, basic dyes, blown oils, crude rubber, metallic soaps, shellac, and bitumen. [Pg.364]

The polymer is quite linear, as can be seen by following the thickened valency lines. It is a saturated polyester resin, because the polymer chain is held together by a series of ester linkages and it contains no aliphatic double bonds. To include an oil fatty acid we would use a monoglyceride instead of ethylene glycol. This would still leave our alcohol a functionality of two, e.g. ... [Pg.159]

Although more expensive, saturated polyester resins have better colour retention and water-resistance. Ether linkages are water-sensitive (diethyl ether, C2H3 0 C2H5, is partly soluble in water) and in polyethers they are repeated throughout the polymer chain without the separation by long, water-insensitive hydrocarbon chains which could offset their effect. [Pg.197]

Saturated polyester-resins have been defined in Chapter 12 and their use with nitrogen resins was described in Chapter 13. The resins used in polyurethane finishes might contain a selection from the ingredients listed on p. 161 and, amongst others ... [Pg.197]

First comes the unsaturated polyester resin itself. From Chapters 12 and 15 we should have a clear idea of what is meant by a polyester resin and, in particular, a saturated polyester resin. Although a drying-oil alkyd is, in a sense, an unsaturated polyester resin, the term has come to be applied solely to polyester resins based on components which introduce unsaturation directly into the polyester backbone. This unsaturation must be capable of direct addition copolymerization with vinyl monomers. To give a linear polymer, any of the dibasic acids or dihydric alcohols mentioned in Chapters 12 and 15 may be used, but the resin should include some unsaturated components. These are usually, though not necessarily, acids, e.g. ... [Pg.204]

Also, isocyanates are used in the formulation of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) (25). A polyester-polsuirethane IPN with a ratio typical for sheet molding compoimd (SMC) is obtained from MDI, poly(caprolactone triol), an im-saturated polyester resin, and styrene monomer (26). IPNs are also reviewed im-der polyurethanes. [Pg.4149]
