Plasticator primary purpose

Water-emulsifiable vehicles contain emulsifiers that may act as plasticizers after film formation, affecting the hardness. Water-soluble vehicles usually contain a neutralizing amine, the primary purpose of which is to solubihze the resin. These amines can influence the drying properties as they tend to complex the metal drier, thus affecting the catalytic activity. Acceptable results are usually obtained with trialkylamines such as dim ethyl eth a n o1 amine, trimethyl amine, and aminomethylpropan o1 (7). [Pg.222]

Although the primary purpose of this chapter is to discuss mechanical testing and strength of adhesive joints, the reader should be aware that ASTM covers a wide variety of tests to measure other properties. ASTM, for example, includes standard tests to measure the viscosity of uncured adhesives, density of liquid adhesive components, nonvolatile content of adhesives, filler content, extent of water absorption, stress cracking of plastics by liquid adhesives, odor, heat stability of hot-melt adhesives, ash content, and similar properties or features of adhesives. [Pg.242]

In most cases, different types of plastics must be recycled separately so that the recycled material has the greatest value and potential use. In 1988 the American Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. (SPI) introduced a voluntary resin identification system which indicates the type of plastics that an item is made from. The primary purpose of the codes is to allow for efficient separation of different polymer types for recycling. The symbols used in the code consist of arrows that cycle clockwise to form... [Pg.252]

Since the primary purpose of the datasheet is a sales tool, the data reported in the datasheets generally focus on single-point data only, which is adequate for initial screening or intermaterial comparison. By their very nature, such data are inadequate for design and engineering analysis, as they bear little relevance to the end-use performance of the product and provide very little insight into how well the plastics will perform in service ... [Pg.890]

Serious effort is being made in many countries to find a suitable way to utilise plastic waste or at least enable it to be recycled/reused as a result, the European Union has adopted numerous directives and legislation. Their primary purpose is to develop sustainable management in the long term and potential energy recovery from plastic waste. The main requirements are listed below [13] ... [Pg.215]

The primary purpose of the backup material in the joint is to control the depth of the sealant in the joint, thus ensuring the proper shape factor. Another purpose of the backing is to provide support or reinforcement for the sealant material in horizontal joints, such as floors and patios. Depending on the type of construction, the backup material may be already in the joint—for example, the plastic or cork board joint sometimes used in pavement construction. ... [Pg.632]

Thermoformed calendered sheeting requires the use of pol5mer alloys in order to maintain the embossed surface grain under the thermoforming process used for IP fabrication. These products are typically about 75/25 blends of flexible PVC/ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer). The plasticizer systems are similar to those used in the slush-molding process, except for occasional use of DIDP and other low-volatility phthalates as a partial component in the plasticizer blend for the primary purpose of cost reduction. [Pg.224]

Organic pigments are used to color a variety of media. It is useful to distinguish between three primary fields of application the coatings and paints industry, the printing inks industry, and the plastics and fibers industry. Besides, organic pigments are used for special purposes, for instance in office materials and in the mass coloration of paper. [Pg.142]

Processes which melt mix polymer and filler are capable of generating the high shear stresses necessary to cause agglomerate break up, together with re-distribution of the primary filler particles. Since its conception in 1835, the two-roll mill has proved to be an effective means of mixing additives into plastics and rubber and is still in widespread use today, principally for laboratory purposes, but to some extent in large-scale industrial applications. [Pg.190]

Primary plasticizers may be further subdivided. The phthalate types me by far the most popular due to cost and ease of incorporation. Dioctyl phthalate and diisooctyl phthalate are typical of this class, They exhibit good general -purpose properties. Phosphate plasticizers are also important for general-purpose use. Typical of these are tritolyl phosphate and trixylenyl phosphate. These plasticizers also impart fire retardant properties. Low-temperature plasticizers, such as dibntyl sebacate, are used where good low-temperature flexibility is required, For maximum... [Pg.1357]
