Plastic pipe polyethylene

For process water, steel pipes are used unless iron pickup is to be minimized. Plastic pipes (polyethylene and polyvinylchloride) are used but they sometimes need external protection from solvents present in industrial atmospheres, ultraviolet radiation (including sunlight), freezing and mechanical damage. [Pg.897]

About 10% of the ethylene produced in the U.S. is used to make vinyl chloride, which in the chemical trade is usually referred to as vinyl chloride monomer or VCM. The largest use of VCM is for polymerization to poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), a thermoplastic, which in terms of volume is second only to polyethylene. PVC is used in such diverse areas as containers, floor coverings (linoleum), plastic pipes, raincoats, and many, many others. PVC has an evironmental disadvantage over non-chlorine containing plastics in that when it is disposed of by incineration it produces hydrogen chloride, which dissolves in atmospheric water to give hydrochloric acid. Polyethylene does not have this undesirable feature. [Pg.124]

Materials acceptable for underground piping use include ductile iron, fiberglass-reinforced epoxy plastic, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, reinforced concrete, and carbon steel. Plastic pipes are not acceptable in areas subject to solvent exposure. [Pg.172]

At NSF, a great deal of work is done on the development and implementation of NSF standards and criteria for health-related equipment. The majority of NSF standards relate to water treatment and purification equipment, products for swimming pool applications, plastic pipe for potable water as well as drain, waste, and vent (DWV) uses, plumbing components for mobil homes and recreational vehicles, laboratory furniture, hospital cabinets, polyethylene refuse bags and containers, aerobic waste treatment plants, and other products related to environmental quality. [Pg.120]

Polyethylene is used for milk, food, and detergent bottles. Polypropylene is used for outdoor carpeting for home and sports stadia. Polyfvinyl chloride) is used for home siding and plastic pipe. Polystyrene is used for hot drinking cups and fast-food containers. Polytetrafluoroethylene is used for nonstick cookware. Polymerization of these and other alkenes on an industrial scale is responsible for producing over 50 billion lb per year of plastic and elastomer products in the United States. [Pg.242]

Ground coupled heat pumps may now be feasible, largely due to the availability of durable and Inexpensive plastic pipe. Pipe materials such as polyethylene, FVC, and polybutylene have been found to be adequate In some Instances. However, no material standards or recommended design practices exist to facilitate the optimization of the performance, cost and reliability of these systems. [Pg.212]
