The most important application of hot-plate welding is in the joining of thermoplastic water, gas and effluent pipes, where it is often referred to as butt-fusion welding. It is also used by the automotive industry in the manufacmre of fluid reservoirs and in the welding of PVC door and window frames. 

IMPACT PERFORMANCE OF PE BUTT FUSION WELDED JOINTS... 

Through this work PE butt fusion welded joints were evaluated by means of three point bend sharp notched impact tests. Weld performance at varying temperatures was quantified wifli the aid of Fracture Mechanics techiuques at 1 m/s where dynamic effects are low. The appUcation of conventional fracture mechanics analyses is Umited up to proximately 1 m/s loading rate [6]. Therefore the effect of test velocity on weld performance was evaluated through the absorbed impact energy at 20 C. The smdy was conqrlrted with scanning electron microcopy (SEM) analysis. 

In this work the impact behavior of butt fusion welded PE was evaluated through impact erperiments and SEM...

Techniques, used by the gas and water industries to join and repair pipelines, include butt fusion, electrofusion socket welding and socket jointing (309). The study of bond strength testing for solvent joints in piping systems has noted extreme sensitivity to minor variations in sample preparation (259). 

PTFE (and other fluoropol5miers) tubes and lined pipes are welded by the butt fusion technique (Fig. 

Pipe-Making. In many respects the tube-making methods used in Europe are the same as those used in the United States. There are some differences. Flash-butt welding of line pipe is unknown in Europe. More importantly electric resistance welded pipe, which can be obtained in quite large diameters in the United States, is sometimes available only in small diameter tube in Europe. If large size ERW pipe is ordered in Europe, fusion welded pipe may be delivered Fusion welded pipe may or may not be an acceptable alternative.
