Pipes/piping polyethylene

For process water, steel pipes are used unless iron pickup is to be minimized. Plastic pipes (polyethylene and polyvinylchloride) are used but they sometimes need external protection from solvents present in industrial atmospheres, ultraviolet radiation (including sunlight), freezing and mechanical damage. [Pg.897]

Certain polymers are used largely, if not exclusively, for corrosion control purposes. The significant markets for corrosion control by polymers are composites (primarily glass-reinforced thermosetting resins) PVC pipe, polyethylene pipe, and fluoropolymers. [Pg.219]

Rigid Applications. The use of the lead stabilizers is very limited in the United States but, they are stiU used in several rigid PVC appHcations in Europe and Asia. The highest use of lead stabilizers in rigid PVC is for pipe and conduit appHcations. Tribasic lead sulfate is the primary heat stabilizer with lead stearates included to provide lubrication. The lead products are typically fully formulated, usually including lubricants and pigments for pipe extmsion appHcations. These lead one-packs, when used at about 1.8—2.5 phr, provide all of the stabilizer and lubrication needed to process the polymer. A lead one-pack contains tribasic lead sulfate, dibasic lead stearate calcium stearate, polyethylene wax, paraffin wax, ester wax, and pigments. [Pg.552]

A Russian ammonia pipeline of nearly 2400 km extends from Togliatti on the Volga River to the Port of Odessa on the Black Sea, and a 2200-km, 250-mm dia branch line extends from Godovka in the Ukraine to Panioutino. The pipeline is constmcted of electric-resistance welded steel pipe with 7.9-mm thick walls but uses seamless pipe with 12.7-mm thick walls for river crossings. The pipeline is primed and taped with two layers of polyethylene tape and suppHed with a cathodic protection system for the entire pipeline. Mainline operating pressure is 8.15 MPa (1182 psi) and branch-line operating pressure is 9.7 MPa (1406 psi) (11). [Pg.46]

Pipe for pipelines may be bought with a variety of coatiags, such as tar, fiber glass, felt and heavy paper, epoxy, polyethylene, etc, either pre-apphed or coated and wrapped on the job with special machines as the pipe is lowered iato the treach. An electric detector is used to determine if a coatiag gap (hoHday) exists bare spots are coated before the pipe is laid (see Corrosion and corrosion control). [Pg.50]

The principal use of LDPE and LLDPE in building products is as a film water barrier under below-grade doors as a wall vapor barrier, though PVC is typically preferred and as temporary enclosure film during constmction. The film is made either by extmding a thin-waHed tube, which may be sHt or wound up direcdy, or by extmsion through a slot die and cast direcdy on to a cold roU, cooled, then wound up. The former method is more widely used. A much smaller use for low density polyethylene is in piping. [Pg.327]

High density polyethylene is widely used for pipes and drains, especially in large-diameter cormgated forms. The cormgations provide stronger walls at less thickness, which reduces the materials cost of the pipe. [Pg.327]

Recommended materials of constmction for pipes, tanks, and pumps handling citric acid solutions are 316 stainless steel, fiber glass-reinforced-polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). At elevated temperatures, 304 stainless steel is not recommended (Table 8). [Pg.184]

Polyethylene water piping is not damaged by freezing. Pipe and tubing 2 in and smaller are shipped in coils several hundred feet in length. [Pg.979]

Polyethylene is the lowest-cost plastic commercially available. Mechanical properties are generally poor, particularly above 50°C (120°F), ana pipe must be hilly supported. Carbon-filled grades are resistant to sunlight and weathering. [Pg.2457]

It is less resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons than polyethylene and polypropylene and in fact pipes may be solvent welded. At the same time the resistance to environmental stress cracking is excellent. [Pg.268]

FRP, plastics (polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, and other similar materials), and rubber are general use and are recommended for alum solutions. Care must be taken to provide adequate support for these piping systems, with close attention given to spans between supports so that objectionable deflection will not be experienced. The alum solution should be injected into a zone of rapid mixing or turbulent flow. [Pg.94]

Chlorinated polyether used in temperatures up to 120°C in forms of coatings, extruded pipe and sheet linings is an intermediate between the low-cost commodity polymers such as PVC and polyethylene, and fluorinated polymers [61 ]. [Pg.117]

Another feature of an extruder is the presence of a gauze filter after the screw and before the die. This effectively filters out any inhomogeneous material which might otherwise clog the die. These screen packs as they are called, will normally filter the melt to 120-150 fim. However, there is conclusive evidence to show that even smaller particles than this can initiate cracks in plastics extrudates e.g. polyethylene pressure pipes. In such cases it has been found that fine melt filtration ( 45 p.m) can significantly improve the performance of the extrudate. [Pg.250]
