Mechanical Joints

As mentioned above, aircraft structure is typically quite thin with numerous small fasteners to achieve efficient load transfer through joints. Mechanical fasteners are laborious to install. Adhesive bonding of large area doublers and joints can be accomplished at significant labor hour savings over equivalent mechanically fastened designs. 

Thermosetting resin pipe can be joined with mechanical joints or adhesive-bonded Joints. Mechanical joints are generally a variation of gasketed bell-and-spigot joints and may be either nonrestrained or self-restrained. Adhesive-bonded joints are typically bell-and-spigot or butt-and-strap. Butt-and-strap joints join piping components with multiple layers of resin-saturated glass reinforcement. 

Base metal, that is, if stored, layers of different chemical compositions (oxides, hydroxide, oxydhydrates, carbonates) cover the surfaces their adhesion to the base metal does not then guarantee sufficient strength for a bonded joint. Mechanical surface pretreatment is also required.

In biodynamic systems, motions that occur between anatomical segments of a joint mechanism are not completely arbitrary (free to move in any manner). They are constrained by the nature of the joint mechanism. As a result, the structure of the joint, the relative motions the joint permits, and the distances between successive joints must be understood in order to properly determine the kinematics of the system.

The most descriptive title for this top level of categorisation would be joint mechanism . As this implies an immediate reference to mechanical joints, this term is excluded from the EUROCOMP Design Code. Therefore the three main groups listed above are entitled joint categories .
