The Eguilibrium State. The linear pinch of Fig.l is considered in a rectangular frame (x,y,z). Limiting ourselves to small deviations from a circular plasma cross section, an unperturbed plasma current j = (0,0,j ) = curlB /y is assumed where... [Pg.145]

Collisional ionization can play an important role in plasmas, flames and atmospheric and interstellar physics and chemistry. Models of these phenomena depend critically on the accurate detennination of absolute cross sections and rate coefficients. The rate coefficient is the quantity closest to what an experiment actually measures and can be regarded as the cross section averaged over the collision velocity distribution. [Pg.2476]

The probability for a particular electron collision process to occur is expressed in tenns of the corresponding electron-impact cross section n which is a function of the energy of the colliding electron. All inelastic electron collision processes have a minimum energy (tlireshold) below which the process cannot occur for reasons of energy conservation. In plasmas, the electrons are not mono-energetic, but have an energy or velocity distribution,/(v). In those cases, it is often convenient to define a rate coefficient /cfor each two-body collision process ... [Pg.2800]

Health benefits of carotenoids are related to their bioavailability and thus then-absorption. Plasma concentration is considered a good biomarker of fruit and vegetable consumption. Table 3.1.1 shows plasma carotenoid levels in EPIC study subjects from 16 European locations. EPIC was the first large cross-sectional study analyzing plasma carotenoid levels in several European populations. ... [Pg.128]

In this Section we want to present one of the fingerprints of noble-metal cluster formation, that is the development of a well-defined absorption band in the visible or near UV spectrum which is called the surface plasma resonance (SPR) absorption. SPR is typical of s-type metals like noble and alkali metals and it is due to a collective excitation of the delocalized conduction electrons confined within the cluster volume [15]. The theory developed by G. Mie in 1908 [22], for spherical non-interacting nanoparticles of radius R embedded in a non-absorbing medium with dielectric constant s i (i.e. with a refractive index n = Sm ) gives the extinction cross-section a(o),R) in the dipolar approximation as ... [Pg.275]

Turner and Hopkins [90] previously reported an unusual structure of the EEDF. They found a dip at eV in the EEDF of a N2 plasma. They interpreted the dip as the electric absorption of a N2 molecule corresponding to the resonant peak of the vibrational excitation cross section. [Pg.9]

Since the experimental work on H3 recombination provided much of the impetus for this work, we will compare two recent experiments, a merged-beam and a plasma afterglow experiment. We conclude that the results can be reconciled by postulating the formation of long-lived Rydberg states and that these are quite sensitive to the environment in which the recombination occurs. In beam experiments (Section TV. B ) the observed cross sections are shown to be sensitive to the presence of electric fields. In the afterglow experiments, the concentration of third... [Pg.50]

In the case of H in low-temperature deposited silicon nitride films, ion beam techniques have again been used to calibrate IR absorption. The IR absorption cross sections most often quoted in the literature for Si—H and N—H bonds in plasma-deposited material are those of Lanford and Rand (1978) who used 15N nuclear reaction to calibrate their IR spectrometry. Later measurements in CVD nitride films, using similar techniques, confirmed these cross sections (Peercy et al., 1979). [Pg.212]
