As discussed in Chapter 2, The Toller Selection Process, evaluating the site s safe work practice procedures should have been a part of the review during the toller selection process. Still, new materials may indicate a need to revise or develop special procedures to address unique chemical and physical hazards. New hazards such as vacuum, ciyogenics, ultra-high pressure, or new rotating equipment could be introduced. Medical monitoring requirements or special handling and spill response procedures for the toll s raw materials and products may indicate a need to write or revise safe work practices. 

With regard to the hazard concern from physical and mechanical handling, the expl nature of the materials can pose a special problem. For example, during pneumatic transfer of samples in fast neutron activation, the polyethylene vials containing the expl approach speeds of 15m/sec and come to rest against a metal stop at both irradiation and count stations. However at PicArsn (Ref 13), in over 1000 irradiations and pneumatic transfers with up to 2.3g of shock-resistant secondary expls such as TNT, HMX,... 

Understand the hazardous properties of the materials to be stored and handled (Flammability, Reactivity, Toxicity, Other Hazards), as well as the physical hazards associated with the expected process design. 

The fourth question to be addressed is whether any hazardous materials or dangerous goods are stored or handled at your facility. Information is sometimes needed about the human and environmental hazards associated with handling and shipping various petroleum products. This information can often be obtained by utilizing the physical property values and product safety data information compiled for hazardous materials. This chapter contains valuable safety and hazard information for common fuels, oils and solvents. 

Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). The hazard communication standard requires that all personnel receive training concerning the types of materials handled in the workplace and the potential hazards associated with handling and use of these materials. In addition, the standard requires that a MSDS for each hazardous material be made available for individual employee reference. The MSDS outlines specific material chemical and physical properties, exposure information, emergency response information, regulatory information, and any other information of significance concerning the material. 

The pyrolysis community may feel that the classification of fast pyrolysis liquid as "dangerous" or "hazardous" material does not reflect the true nature of the liquid. However, due to the highly variable chemical and physical properties, a wide spectrum of liquids must be considered. This paper addresses legislative requirements, transport, storage and handling of the liquid and the mitigation of spills.

Suppliers and generators of hazardous materials used in the workplace are required to document the specific hazards and related safety precautions and procedures. To do this, they generally create MSDSs. An MSDS contains information about chemical properties, health and physical hazards, first aid and medical treatment, emergency response, and the handling and disposal of chemicals. The MSDS should be concise, and immediately accessible and usable. MSDSs are available for chemical products from all U.S. and most European suppliers or manufacmrers.
