Phosphor-bronze

Phosphorus compounds are very important as fertilizers (world use 1976/77 27-3 megatonnes as P2O5) but are widely used in matches, pesticides, special glasses and china ware, alloys (sleels. phosphor bronze), and metal treating (10%), detergents (40%), electrical components (e.g. GaP), foods and drinks (15%). Phosphates are an essential constituent of living organisms. U.S. production of phosphorus 1982 372 000 tonnes. [Pg.308]

Copper and Copper Alloys. The coppers are divided into oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free coppers. Numerous copper alloys are of commercial importance, including those alloys with zinc (brasses), with tin (phosphor bronzes), and with aluminum (aluminum bronzes) all are weldable. [Pg.347]

Copper and tin phosphides are used as deoxidants in the production of the respective metals, to increase the tensile strength and corrosion resistance in phosphor bronze [12767-50-9] and as components of brazing solders (see Solders and brazing alloys). Phosphor bronze is an alloy of copper and 1.25—11 wt % tin. As tin may be completely oxidized in a copper alloy in the form of stannic oxide, 0.03—0.35 wt % phosphoms is added to deoxidize the alloy. As for storage tanks, stainless steel and lacquer-lined mild steel are suitable materials of constmction for pipe lines. For pumps, valves, etc, various alloys are suitable, including phosphor bronze, gun metal. Monel, stainless steel, and certain nickel steel alloys. Tin Bronzes. Tin bronzes may be the most familiar of copper alloys with roots going back into ancient times. Whereas bronze is stiU used for statuary, these alloys are found in many modem appHcations, such as electrical connectors, bearings, beUows, and diaphragms. The press had been designed with a capacity to deliver 280 kN press force and to work at a production rate of 40 lids per minute.
