Phosphorus compounds are very important as fertilizers (world use 1976/77 27-3 megatonnes as P2O5) but are widely used in matches, pesticides, special glasses and china ware, alloys (sleels. phosphor bronze), and metal treating (10%), detergents (40%), electrical components (e.g. GaP), foods and drinks (15%). Phosphates are an essential constituent of living organisms. U.S. production of phosphorus 1982 372 000 tonnes. [Pg.308]

If the components are colourless, their separation can often be followed by working in a quartz (or special glass) tube which is placed in the light of a mercury lamp. The separate zones are then often revealed by their fluorescence. [Pg.49]

In recent years, concentrated phosphoric acids, which may contain as much as 70% to 75% P2O5 content, have become of great importance to agriculture and farm production. World-wide demand for fertilizers has caused record phosphate production. Phosphates are used in the production of special glasses, such as those used for sodium lamps. [Pg.37]

In 1964, workers at the Joint Nuclear Research Institute at Dubna (U.S.S.R.) bombarded plutonium with accelerated 113 to 115 MeV neon ions. By measuring fission tracks in a special glass with a microscope, they detected an isotope that decays by spontaneous fission. They suggested that this isotope, which had a half-life of 0.3 +/- 0.1 s might be 260-104, produced by the following reaction 242Pu + 22Ne —> 104 +4n. [Pg.158]

Laser action can be induced in Nd ions embedded in a suitable solid matrix. Several matrices, including some special glasses, are suitable but one of the most frequently used is yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3AI5O12), which is referred to as YAG. [Pg.349]

Color. Many water samples have a yellow to brownish-yeUow color which is caused by natural substances, eg, leaves, bark, humus, and peat material. Turbidity in a sample can make the measurement of color uncertain and is usually removed by centrifiigation prior to analysis. The color is usually measured by comparison of the sample with known concentrations of colored solutions. A platinum—cobalt solution is used as the standard, and the unit of color is that produced by 1 mg/L platinum as chloroplatinate ion. The standard is prepared from potassium chloroplatinate (K PtCl ) and cobalt chloride (C0CI26H2O). The sample may also be compared to suitably caUbrated special glass color disks. [Pg.230]

The application of sulfosuccinates in the field of household products is limited. But when extremely-good wetting properties are desired the short C-chain dialkyl sulfosuccinates are used. Examples are special glass cleansers (beer glass cleaner, spectacle glass cleaner, windscreen cleaner), floor cleaner, and wallpaper stripper. The amount added to the formula is between 0.5% and 2.5%, although for wallpaper stripper up to 20% is used. A typical formulation for a glass cleaner is ... [Pg.530]

A chip-type micro reactor array comprises parallel mixer units composed of inverse mixing tees, each followed by a micro channel that it is surrounded by heat exchange micro channels (so called channel-by-channel approach similar to the tube-in-tube concept). Such an integrated device was developed as a stack of microstructured plates made of a special glass, termed Foturan (Figure 4.26). The integrated device was attached to PTFE tubes of various lengths. [Pg.406]

Special glasses for ampoules are mentioned on p. 24 Monax is also a good glass for ampoules. [Pg.64]

When making a seal the tungsten rod is first beaded as with Pyrex. The bead of the special glass may either be fused directly into Pyrex (Figure 38,1) or first fused into a tube of the same glass and this tube cut near to the seal and fused to a Pyrex tube (Figure 38, It). [Pg.152]

The entrance window is a relevant part of the sensor. Common glasses as well as most transparent plastics block UV radiation. Standard UV-transmitting materials like quartz and sapphire are expensive. For UVA and to some extent the UVB special glasses but also plastics like some PMMA-derivatives or some silicon gels are available with a reasonable transmittance down to about 330 nm. For UVC applications with the important 254 nm line of Hg, quartz remains the standard solution. [Pg.170]

Desorption with hot air and decontamination with air and mixture of evaporated ammonia and water was realized in special glass desorber (figure 2). [Pg.184]
