Another issue in the preparation of reference material is the required shelf life. The shelf life of reference material is the time that it remains stable under proper storage conditions. Depending on the nature of the mechanisms affecting the stability of the material, various actions can be taken to improve the shelf life. Reduction of the moisture content is one of the first options to be considered. In many cases, moisture plays a key role in mechanisms leading to instability of the matrix and/or parameters. In other cases, sterilization or pasteurization of the material might be considered in order to stop bacterial activity. When preparing solutions, additives may increase the shelf life. Obviously, the shelf life of material is also a function of the storage conditions. 

Application of the test substance to the test system is without doubt the most critical step of the residue field trial. Under-application may be corrected, if possible and if approved by the Study Director, by making a follow-up application if the error becomes known shortly after the application has been made. Over-application errors can usually only be corrected by starting the trial again. The Study Director must be contacted as soon as an error of this nature is detected. Immediate communication allows for the most feasible options to be considered in resolving the error. If application errors are not detected at the time of the application, the samples from such a trial can easily become the source of undesirable variability when the final analysis results are known. Because the application is critical, the PI must calculate and verify the data that will constitute the application information for the trial. If the test substance weight, the spray volume, the delivery rate, the size of the plot, and the travel speed for the application are carefully determined and then validated prior to the application, problems will seldom arise. With the advent of new tools such as computers and hand-held calculators, the errors traditionally associated with applications to small plot trials should be minimized in the future. The following paragraphs outline some of the important considerations for each of the phases of the application. 

As we shall see in the following examples, the new uses of CMP are likely to be discretionary in future technologies. Integrators will have non-CMP options available to complete their task. In order for the CMP-based options to be considered the best options, CMP has become a valued tool in the integrator s toolbox. 

For emission reduction the first option to be considered is the prevention of harmful emission rather than aftertreatment. The product may be used to reduce the thermal bridges due to studs in wood-frame or steel-frame building envelopes [86], The current costs of the product are in the range of 25 irT or 4000 m (as of November 2008), whereas the material costs of conventional insulation materials are about 10 times lower for the same thermal resistance. Nevertheless, wherever (limited) space is an important topic, aerogel may be an option to be considered. The aerogel insulation material consists of amorphous silica instead of crystalline silica, reducing possible health risks at exposure. 

Combustion and operational modifications. Process optimization through combustion modifications (COM) was one of the first options to be considered for reducing emissions. Improvements to be considered include improved process control and automation systems, reduced excess air and firing temperature, improved raw mix design that optimized chnker cooling and air preheat, and most other modifications that improve thermal effidenry. These low-cost options should be maximized but must be evaluated against degradation of clinker quahty and possible increases in other emissions. 

The primary concerns of the process chromatographer are final product purity and process economy. This can be interpreted as selectivity and productivity as defined by capacity and speed. The choice of the chromatographic media has a dramatic effect on the overall performance of the process separation and is therefore critical if these objectives are to be achieved. There are now available many different types of polymeric packings (Table 5-3) which enable options to be considered but which only a few years ago where not available.
