Biotechnology pharmaceuticals

The need of modern science to achieve a sustainable future development has been shown in many circumstances in society. Finding strategies less harmful to the environment has been a quest for research in several areas, such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and food industries. With that purpose, the increase in research and development of more applications of xylan and its derivatives has shown the versatility of this biopolymer, thus helping the search for sustainable alternatives. [Pg.78]

Combinatorial chemistry and parallel synthesis are now the dominant methods of compound synthesis at the lead discovery stage [2]. The method of chemistry synthesis is important because it dictates compound physical form and therefore compound aqueous solubility. As the volume of chemistry synthetic output increases due to combinatorial chemistry and parallel synthesis, there is an increasing probability that resultant chemistry physical form will be amorphous or a neat material of indeterminate solid appearance. There are two major styles of combinatorial chemistry - solid-phase and solution-phase synthesis. There is some uncertainty as to the true relative contribution of each method to chemistry output in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. Published reviews of combinatorial library synthesis suggest that solid-phase synthesis is currently the dominant style contributing to about 80% of combinatorial libraries [3]. In solid-phase synthesis the mode of synthesis dictates that relatively small quantitities of compounds are made. [Pg.216]

Additional future innovations likely to impact upon pharmaceutical biotechnology include the development of alternative product production systems, alternative methods of delivery and the development of engineered cell-based therapies, particularly stem cell therapy. As mentioned previously, protein-based biotechnology products produced to date are produced in either microbial... [Pg.10]

Almost all products of modern pharmaceutical biotechnology, be they on the market or likely to gain approval in the short to intermediate term, are protein based. As such, an understanding of protein structure is central to this topic. A comprehensive treatment of the subject would easily constitute a book on its own, and many such publications are available. The aim of this chapter is to provide a basic overview of the subject in order to equip the reader with a knowledge of protein science sufficient to understand relevant concepts outlined in the remaining chapters of this book. The interested reader is also referred to the Further reading section, which lists several excellent specialist publications in the field. Much additional information may also be sourced via the web sites mentioned within the chapter. [Pg.13]

CROs are growing and mutating making it difficult to identify specific trends. However, one thing is certain, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical devices sponsors expect to increase outsourcing to the several hundred CROs. In fact, pharmaceutical companies have already increased their use of CROs from 28% of clinical studies in 1993 to 61% in 1999. This... [Pg.422]
