The industrial production of penicillin by Pfizer in 1943 transformed the chemistry of natural products. Microbiology became its field and pharmaceutical research became its leading trend. The main driving force behind the research of the chemistry of natural products was and still remains to be human health care. Since the advent of antibiotics, many sources of natural chemicals, such as plants, fungi and bacteria, have been searched for antibacterials, anticancer products, immuno-suppressors and chemicals that affect the human psyche. This research was so successful that, even today, more than half of all pharmaceuticals are either natural products or derived from, or inspired by them. The market of antibiotics alone was ca. US 30 billion in 2005. The majority of antibiotics is produced by submerged fermentation of filamentous microorganisms such as soil prokaryotic actinomycetes and eukaryotic moulds, ascomycetes. [Pg.253]

The problem of chiral synthesis is critical in making pharmaceuticals. Researchers at GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Pfizer have examined 128 syntheses from their own companies and found that as many as half of the drug compounds made by their process R D groups are not only chiral but also each contains an average of two chiral centers [ 15 2]. To meet regulatory requirements, enantiomeric purities of 99.5% were found to be necessary. Biocatalysis is thus an essential tool for pharmaceutical research, and contributes to the development of more sustainable processes. [Pg.108]

In this program 20 students from predominantly undergraduate institutions were selected to receive 2500 fellowships to conduct research full time, normally during the summer months, with their faculty mentor. For the summer preceding their entrance into graduate school, industrial sponsors offer their awardees the opportunity to work in their corporate research laboratories. These Research Partnerships link student and faculty member with the fellowship sponsor to provide them with an association for mutual identification not otherwise possible. Sponsors in 1990 were American Cyanamid Company (Agricultural Research Division), Eli Lilly and Company, Hewlett-Packard Company, the Merck Company Foundation, Norwich ton Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Pfizer Central Research, Rohm and Haas Company, and SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals. [Pg.16]

Essex UK) and more recently with Pfizer Global Research Development (Groton, CT). CI-976 is also commercially available from Tocris Cookson Inc (Ellisville, MO) and Tocris Cookson Ltd (Bristol, UK) (Cat. No. 2227), and material from this source is active in our hands. However, we have not used material from this source. A group of workers at Pfizer Global Research and Development (Alfonsi et al., 2008) have used these principles to draw up a list of solvents in a traffic-light scheme (green = preferred, amber = usable with caution, red = undesirable), together with a list of substitutes for undesirable solvents. They were considering the pharmaceutical industry primarily, but their advice is of general applicability. The... [Pg.179]

Viagra is a trade name marketed by Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company and is chemically sidenafil citrate. Researchers did not start CTeating a drug for impotence. The chemical compound was developed originally for angina (severe but tanporary attack of cardiac pain) and is chemically an inhibitor for an enzyme phosphodiesterase (see the previous section, for example, for the idea of enzyme inhibitor). The drug was not successful in treating heart problems, but many of the test subjects reported their successes in bedroom activity. It turned out that the compound inhibits... [Pg.95]
