Petrolatum ointment

Type of vehicle eyedrops, petrolatum ointment or hydrogel Particle size and size distribution of dispersed 4iasc Particle dissolution rate... [Pg.311]

The disadvantages of petrolatum ointments have stimulated research on altcmulive, more acceptable semisolid vehicles. Polymeric hydrogels containing dissolved drugs have been developed and now account for 0.7% of the ocular... [Pg.312]

At the conclusion of the procedure, Aquaphor or petrolatum ointment is applied to treated areas. Patients are instructed to cleanse these areas with a gentle cleanser and may apply bland moisturizer twice daily to promote healing and hasten exfoliation. Sun avoidance in the immediate postprocedure period and broad spectrum photo protection thereafter are recommended. From the outset, patients are advised that multiple sessions (3-6 in most people) are needed to see substantive improvement. [Pg.121]

Ophthalmic ointments usually contain petrolatum as the base. The petrolatum is sterilized by dry heat and combined with the sterile dmg powder under aseptic conditions. Ophthalmic suspensions contain very fine (- 10 ji) particle sized soHds suspended in an aqueous vehicle. The vehicle is adjusted to isotonicity and viscosity-increasing excipients, chelating agents, and surfactants also may be needed. The aqueous vehicle in these cases is generally autoclaved and mixed with sterile dmg powder asceptically (30). [Pg.234]

Sorbitan sesquioleate emulsions of petrolatum and wax are used as ointment vehicles in skin treatment. In topical appHcations, the inclusion of both sorbitan fatty esters and their poly(oxyethylene) derivatives modifies the rate of release and promotes the absorption of antibiotics, antiseptics, local anesthetics, vasoconstrictors, and other medications from suppositories, ointments, and lotions. Poly(oxyethylene(20)) sorbitan monooleate, also known as Polysorbate 80 (USP 23), has been used to promote absorption of ingested fats from the intestine (245). [Pg.54]

Once the desired frost is achieved, the skin can be rinsed off with water, or cooled down with cool wet compresses which are applied to the skin. The wet compresses can provide a welcome relief to the burning induced by the peel. Unlike glycolic peels the water does not neutralize the peel, as the frosting indicates the end-point of the reaction rather, it dilutes any excess TCA. The compresses can be repeated several times until the burning sensation has subsided. Subsequently, a layer of ointment such as plain petrolatum or Aquaphor is applied and post-peel instructions and what to expect are reviewed with the patient prior to discharge to home. [Pg.65]

Melt the stearyl alcohol, white wax, and cholesterol (steam bath). Add the petrolatum and continue heating until a liquid melt is formed. Cool with stirring until congealed. III. Water-washable ointment (hydrophilic ointment, USP) White petrolatum 25% (w/w)... [Pg.224]

Melt the stearyl alcohol and white petrolatum (steam bath) and warm to about 75°C. Heat the water to 75°C and add the sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, methylparaben, and propylparaben. Add the aqueous phase and stir until congealed. IV. Water-soluble ointment (polyethylene glycol ointment, USP 14) Polyethylene glycol 4000 (Carbowax 4000) 50%... [Pg.224]

In the fusion method for ointments, mineral oil, petrolatum, waxes, and other ingredients that belong in the formulation are heated together to somewhere... [Pg.225]

Oils have been used as vehicles for several topical eyedrop products that are extremely sensitive to moisture. Tetracycline HC1 is an antibiotic that is stable for only a few days in aqueous solution. It is supplied as a 1% sterile suspension with Plastibase 50W and light liquid petrolatum. White petrolatum and its combination with liquid petrolatum to obtain a proper consistency is routinely used as the vehicle for ophthalmic ointments. [Pg.460]

The anhydrous petrolatum base may be made more miscible with water through the use of an anhydrous liquid lanolin derivative. Drugs can be incorporated into such a base in aqueous solution if desired. Poly-oxyl 40 stearate and polyethylene glycol 300 are used in an anti-infective ointment to solubilize the active principle in the base so that the ointment can be sterilized by aseptic filtration. The cosmetic-type bases, such as the oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion bases popular in dermatology, should not be used in the eye, nor should liquid emulsions, owing to the ocular irritation produced by the soaps and surfactants used to form the emulsion. [Pg.462]

Petrolatum is produced from lubricating oils. Petrolatum is used in the medicinal field where it is combined with other compounds to form salves, creams, ointments and petroleum jelly. [Pg.37]

What is the percentage of ichthammol in the finished product when 100 g of 10% ichthammol ointment, 400 g of 5% ichthammol ointment, and 100 g of petrolatum (diluent) are mixed ... [Pg.145]

What is the percentage of zinc oxide in an ointment prepared by mixing 2 lb (avoir.) of a 10% zinc oxide ointment, 900 g of a 20% zinc oxide ointment, and 3 lb (avoir.) of white petrolatum (diluent) ... [Pg.146]

How many grams of petrolatum (diluent) should be added to 250 g of a 20% ichthammol ointment to make a 6% ointment ... [Pg.148]

How many grains of 20% benzocaine ointment and how many grains of white petrolatum (diluent) should be used in compounding the following prescription ... [Pg.148]

In what proportion should a 20% coal tar ointment be mixed with white petrolatum (diluent) to produce a 2% coal tar ointment ... [Pg.149]

Ointments and Creams Ointments are applied to the skin for topical treatment or to be absorbed into the blood system for delivery to target areas. They are semisofid preparations obtained by mixing the API with selected ointment bases depending on intended use. These bases include petrolatum, paraffin, mineral oil, lanolin, and glycols. Preservatives are often added to ensure the ointments will maintain the recommended shelf life. [Pg.350]
