In paints, zinc oxide serves as a mildewstat and acid buffer as well as a pigment. The oxide also is a starting material for many zinc chemicals. The oxide supphes zinc in animal feeds and is a fertilizer supplement used in zinc-deficient soils. Its chemical action in cosmetics (qv) and dmgs is varied and complex but, based upon its fungicidal activity, it promotes wound healing. It is also essential in nutrition. Zinc oxide is used to prepare dental cements in combination with eugenol and phosphoric and poly(acrylic acid)s (48) (see Dental materials).

A substrate is a substance that is the basic component of an organism. Protein substrates are amino acids, which are essential to life Protein substrates are amino acid preparations that act to promote the production of proteins (anabolism). Amino acids are necessary to promote synthesis of structural components, reduce the rate of protein breakdown (catabolism), promote wound healing, and act as buffers in the extracellular and intracellular fluids. Crystalline amino acid preparations are hypertonic solutions of balanced essential and nonessential amino acid concentrations that provide substrates for protein synthesis or act to conserve existing body protein. 

Amino acids promote the production of proteins, enhance tissue repair and wound healing, and reduce the rate of protein breakdown. Amino acids are used in certain disease states, such as severe kidney and liver disease, as well as in TPN solutions. (See the last section of this chapter for a more detailed discussion of TPN.) TPN may be used in patients with conditions such as impairment of gastrointestinal absorption of protein, in patients with an increased requirement for protein, as seen in those with extensive bums or infections, and in patients with no available oral route for nutritional intake ...

Upon resolntion of the pathogen, the second phase of wonnd healing occurs where re-epithelialization and neovascularization are essential for wound closure. Formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) (Barcelos et al. 2005 Roy et al. 2008), fibrin matrices (Midwood et al. 2006), and collagen deposits (Seppinen et al. 2008) are all events that promote the wound closure process.
