As mentioned in chapter 2, individuals particular personality style and unique psychodynamics will often dramatically influence how they respond to pharmacotherapy. Robert Michaels (1992) has commented that in general clinical practice two-thirds of patients with Axis I disorders appear to respond quite well either to medication treatment or to brief, targeted psychological interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral or interpersonal therapy. However, a significant minority of patients with clear-cut Axis I disorders don t respond well to such treatments, primarily due to serious co-morbid character pathology. In treating these people, at the very least the clinician must be alert to how personality factors influence treatment outcome often medication treatment must be accompanied by more intensive psychotherapy that addresses the personality disorder.

Multiple personality disorder (MPD) is a chronic and recurrent emotional illness. A person with MPD plays host to two or more personalities. Each identity has its own unique style of viewing and understanding the world and may have its own name. These distinct personalities periodically control that person s behavior as if several people were alternately sharing the same body. Because those diagnosed with multiple personality disorder often are not aware of the alternate personalities, called alters, inside themselves, they cannot account for blocks of time when these other identities control their memory, thinking, and behavior. In 1994 multiple personality disorder was renamed disassociative identity disorder by the American Psychiatric Association.

Team-based PSFs include the way the team members interact and communicate. While communication style and role awareness are unique to each individual, these PSFs are not person-based because communication requires at least two participants. Likewise, role awareness only emerges as an influencmg factor when there are multiple roles available. 

Person-based PSFs are internal factors that affect each individual. People may act as a member of a team and an organization, but every individual has a unique working style and unique perception of a situation. 

The team-based PSF category has anon-trivial correlation with several other PSF categories. There are multiple explanations for this behavior. Team factors are likely to be correlated with the person-based factors because a team is composed of individuals, and therefore the individual characteristics of the team members affect the team. For example while communication is categorized as team-based, each member has a unique inherent personal communication style, and these styles combine together to form the team-based commrmication. However, we can state that by definition the communication must occur between two or more people, so while the inherent characteristics of each person do play a role, there cannot be communication without multiple individuals, i.e. ateam. It follows logically that there is a correlation between team-based and stressor factors because personal characteristics influence both elements. 

Basic design-implement experiences have benefits for instructors, as well. From these experiences, instructors become familiar with the personalities, maturity, dependability, and unique skills of students at an early stage in their education. Because they get to know students better, instructors are able to recognize individuals and their learning styles, in ways that are not always possible...

The study of personality is an area of psychology which has spawned many parallel and conflictag theories. One style of theory tries to explain where personality comes from and classifies people into types or groups based on differences in personality development other theories merely classify the end result and measure existing differences (trait theories). A typical example of the latter is Cattell s trait theory. From extensive research based upon the responses to questionnaires on their beliefs and preferences by many thousands of individuals, Cattell produced a list of 16 personality factors (see Table 2.7.1). The factors are envisaged as 16 dimensions on which an individual s position can be plotted to produce a profile which describes that unique individual. Since someone can score from 1 to 10 on each scale, these 16 scales provide 10 unique character combinations or personalities, which is more tiian the total number of human beings who have ever walked the earth since Homo sapiens evolved. 

Although the content of each SSPP should contain the same basic elements, not all SSPPs are identical or necessarily look alike (nor should they). Each plan is unique to the particular type, size, and safety-criticality of system involved it expresses the personality and management style for the organization developing the product. A tailored SSPP for a small project would normally look much different than a tailored plan for a large project. The SSPP for a non-safety-critical system would look different than one for an extremely safety-critical project.
