Perceptions of safety

Safety evaluation does not cease being an essential element in the success of the pharmaceutical industry once a product is on the market. It is also essential to support marketed products and ensure that their use is not only effective but also safe and unclouded by unfounded perceptions of safety problems. This requires not only that clinical trials be monitored during development (Spector et al., 1988), but also that experience in the marketplace be monitored. [Pg.25]

In the newest report, patient safety culture was included as one of the safe practices that were reviewed for its evidence, both as a practice and in terms of the context sensitivity of the practice and its adoption. In reviewing the evidence on patient safety culture as a practice. Weaver et al. (2013) suggest that developing a culture of safety is a core element of many efforts to improve patient safety and healthcare quality. Their systematic review identified and assessed interventions used to promote safety culture or climate in acute care settings. Based on this review the authors indicate that there is evidence suggesting that interventions can improve perceptions of safety culture and potentially reduce patient harm. [Pg.276]

Thomas et al. (2005) and Frankel et al. (2005) have examined the impact of EWRs on perceptions of safety chmate. While hospitals typically implement EWRs differently, EWRs share some common features - 1) they are led by hospital executives, 2) executives solicit input from frontline staff about improvement opportunities on the unit, 3) executives ask frontline staff about methods to improve unit safety and 4) executive leaders reiterate their focus on improving... [Pg.286]

Organizations must develop and maintain healthy process safety communications both vertically and horizontally for business and safety. Natmally effective vertical communications must be bi-directional as managers must listen, absorb the issues as well as speak to the safety issues and perception of safety. An ideal safety culture must include provisions to encourage a secure means for employees to anonymously share their concerns and report nonstandard conditions, which could be weak signals of impending troubles [11]. [Pg.436]
