Pedestrian

The way a hazard manifests itself as a threat to an individual affects how that person feels about the risk. For example, the hazards of nuclear power are viewed as much worse than the prospect of being killed as a pedestrian, yet data show the risk of the latter is much greater than that of the former. 

An example of matching scale and objective is the determination of CO exposure of pedestrians on sidewalks in urban street canyons. The location of a station to meet this objective would be an elevation of —3 m on a street with heavy vehicular traffic and large numbers of pedestrians.

In addition to the amount of commercial traffic it is vital to consider the movement associated with employees and visitors, which themselves can generate large numbers of vehicular and pedestrian movements. For very large manufacturing sites there will also be the need for accessibility for public transport, which, for a large workforce, may need to be supplemented by investment in subsidized travel. 

Any gate or security barrier to be set in at least 65 feet (20 meters) from public highway to avoid blockage or interference to pedestrians... 

The first essential step in the system design is goods and pedestrian planning, i.e. 

Perimeter fencing may enhance the security of any premises. Not only does the fence present an obstacle for intruders to overcome but also it establishes the principle of defensible space and constitutes a psychological barrier to access. Figure 13 represents two door sill conditions. The pedestrian door sill is required at locations where the product is not permitted to drain out to the exterior. Note that 1 in 12 slope towards the interior. 

Unfortunately, fumes can drift out of a hood for a variety of reasons and aerosols will drift out. Hoods strain heating and air conditioning systems by consuming vast quantities of room air, they are incompatible with controlled atmospheres, they provide no shielding with the sash up, and their protection is degraded by turbulent flows if they are located near doors or in areas that have heavy pedestrian traffic. Flow at the hood face is obstructed by workers standing in front of the hood and all protection is lost when power failures are experienced. 

Hydrogen vehicles have no effect on the development of congestion, land use due to transport infrastructure and accidents. Whereas the first two points are behind any discussion, some people argue that the introduction of hydrogen vehicles could increase the level of accidents because these propulsion systems produce less noise than internal combustion engines. Up to now there is no empirical evidence to confirm or reject this point. Further, this argumentation seems to be critical because -as the discussion in Section 19.3 has clearly shown - noise is a serious social problem of transportation and much better technical solutions may exist to reduce the level of accidents instead of producing a permanent level of noise. An example is the development of video-based assistant systems, which warn the driver of pedestrians and bikers. 

On a more pedestrian level, China s Textile Ministry is promoting the greater use of synthetics for shoes. While there is ample supply of PVC and polyethylene for informal wear ("bubble sandals" in China), the Chinese will aim for the greater use of synthetic leather for more general-purpose footwear.
