Passivation enforced

Condensation of the triacid with aniline gave an imide 8 for which the barrier to rotation about the CaryrNimid<, bond indicated was about 13 kcal/mole9). However, ortho substituents stop this rotation and fix the conformation in such a way that the alkyl (or practically any other group) is directed away from the carboxyl function as in 9. The seemingly passive methyl groups of this structure thereby limit the internal rotations and enforce a fairly rigid structure. 

Despite early passive views on cannabis use in the United States, however, a gradual accumulation of momentum in opposition to marijuana developed after World War I. Much of the antipathy was based on cultural fears relating to cannabis use by Syrians in New York, East Indians in California and, principally, Mexicans in the Southwest. A more important variant of the COSY experiment is the DQF (double-quantum filtered)— COSY (Fig. B.4), which adds a short delay and a third 90° pulse. The INEPT transfer is divided into two steps antiphase I spin SQC to I,S DQC, and I,S DQC to antiphase S spin SQC. The filter enforces the DQC state during the short delay between the second and third pulses either by phase cycling or with gradients. DQF-COSY spectra have better phase characteristics and weaker diagonal peaks than a simple COSY, so this has become the standard COSY experiment.

The reason for the protective action is known to lie in the fact that the nitric acid, even in a very small concentration, enforces passivation of the stainless steel. Passivation is based on the formation of a thin layer of chromium (III) oxide, which brings the attack to a virtual halt ... 

Recommended maintenance and inspection procedures for the safety devices must be provided per NFPA 86 (sect. 5-2.4 and Chapter 10). It shall be the responsibility of the user to establish, schedule, and enforce the frequency of, and the extent of, the maintenance and inspection program. Most of the critical safety devices are passive devices (they only react under abnormal conditions) therefore, they must be inspected frequently to prove that they are operational. Appendix B of NFPA 86 entitled, Example of Operational and Maintenance Checklist, provides examples of various checklists and inspection/maintenance procedures. 

Although Germany has a long-standing reputation as a passive welfare state with elaborate schemes of status-protecting income replacement through social insurance in case of unemployment and a full-blown system of active labour market policies, all benefit systems had formal elements of activation and work requirement - but they had not been enforced systematically. 

How can the use of ammonium nitrate by terrorists be prevented The most logical approach is to desensitize or neutralize the compound s ability to act as an explosive, but to date no satisfactory way has been found to do so without diminishing its value as a fertilizer. A more passive method is to add to the fertilizer an agent known as a taggant, which would allow law enforcement to trace the source of an ammonium nitrate explosive. A number of European countries now forbid the sale of ammonium nitrate without taggants, although the U.S. Congress has yet to pass such a law. 

Both theoretically and practically, however, the most Interesting aspect of the passivation phenomenon is seeking the mechanism underlying the enforced passivation, the search for the "cause" of passivation and fuller understanding of the surface changes resulting In active-passive transition. 

The difficulty in identifying and enforcing safety constraints in design and operations has increased from the past. In many of our older and less automated systems, physical and operational constraints were often imposed by the hmitations of technology and of the operational environments. Physical laws and the Umits of our materials imposed natural constraints on the complexity of physical designs and allowed the use of passive controls. 

The electrolyte and other conditions must be selected so that both the anodic dissolution and the deposition of the metal occur with high efficiency while none of the impurity metals can transfer from the anode to the cathode. Certainly there must be no passivation of the anode (see Chapter 9) and the objective is to obtain a good-quality, often highly crystalline, deposit at the cathode. Where necessary, additives are added to the electrolyte to enforce the correct behaviour at both electrodes. Chloride ion is a common addition to enhance the dissolution process and, where essential, organic additives are used to modify the cathode deposit. Since, however, organic compounds can be occluded to some extent and reduce the purity of the metal, their use is avoided when possible. 

ZEUS [25], approved by the FDA, is a telesurgical assistant that was specifically designed for laparoscopic surgery by Computer Motion. The patient-side cart carries three robotic arms (Figure 5.1) including two instrument arms and one endoscope arm. Each arm has 4 active DOFs and two passive joints to enforce compliant motion with the fulcrum constraint at the port of entry. The system also has a surgeon s console that carries a pair of master control devices as weU as a display. The system has mainly been used for endoscopic coronary artery bypass procedures, and was discontinued in 2003. 

It should be noted that a hybrid approach to design gas-sensing devices on plastic substrates can be used as well. In particular, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) chip, which require substrates with very different properties, can be transferred onto a plastic substrate Cobianu et al. (2007). Another interesting and new approach is the coating of passive (no power source on board) conventional RFID (radiofrequency identification) tags with chemically sensitive films to form a chemical sensor (Potyrailo and Morris 2007). The detection of several vapors of industrial, health, law enforcement, and security... 

Once the passive dynamical inverse has been obtained, the construction of the SF controller follows from two straightforward considerations [9, 10] (i) the states are assumed to be available for on-line control, and consequently, the state dynamic inverse (Eq. 16a) is dropped, (ii) the prescribed tracking output dynamics are enforced.
