Particle bombardment, use

Four major distinctions can be made between methods of activation analysis. They include the type of radiation or particle bombardment used for sample excitation, the type of radiation observed in the final emission process, sample preparation by isolation of the species of interest, or direct sample observation without separation by an energy-discriminating device such as a y-ray spectrometer. [Pg.20]

Initially, the only means of obtaining elements higher than uranium was by a-particle bombardment of uranium in the cyclotron, and it was by this means that the first, exceedingly minute amounts of neptunium and plutonium were obtained. The separation of these elements from other products and from uranium was difficult methods were devised involving co-precipitation of the minute amounts of their salts on a larger amount of a precipitate with a similar crystal structure (the carrier ). The properties were studied, using quantities of the order of 10 g in volumes of... [Pg.443]

The use of larger particles in the cyclotron, for example carbon, nitrogen or oxygen ions, enabled elements of several units of atomic number beyond uranium to be synthesised. Einsteinium and fermium were obtained by this method and separated by ion-exchange. and indeed first identified by the appearance of their concentration peaks on the elution graph at the places expected for atomic numbers 99 and 100. The concentrations available when this was done were measured not in gcm but in atoms cm. The same elements became available in greater quantity when the first hydrogen bomb was exploded, when they were found in the fission products. Element 101, mendelevium, was made by a-particle bombardment of einsteinium, and nobelium (102) by fusion of curium and the carbon-13 isotope. [Pg.443]

Processing variables that affect the properties of the thermal CVD material include the precursor vapors being used, substrate temperature, precursor vapor temperature gradient above substrate, gas flow pattern and velocity, gas composition and pressure, vapor saturation above substrate, diffusion rate through the boundary layer, substrate material, and impurities in the gases. Eor PECVD, plasma uniformity, plasma properties such as ion and electron temperature and densities, and concurrent energetic particle bombardment during deposition are also important. [Pg.525]

Ion Bombardment fFig. 19-55c) The most positive and strongest method of charging particles for electrostatic separation is ion bombardment. Use of ion bombardment in charging materials of... [Pg.1803]

There are several methods in use for producing these clusters. Particle bombardment or laser vaporization of a graphite surface leads to direct formation of ions that can be detected by mass spectrometry. These are normally of relatively small size (n<30). By laser vaporization of graphite into a molecular beam neutral... [Pg.35]

Seed-specific production of LTB by Streatfield et al. [28] resulted in expression levels of up to 1.8% total soluble protein (TSP), and two separate maize breeding programs have increased antigen production by fivefold [28] and tenfold [27]. The investigations of Chikwamba et al. [27] regarding the expression of LTB in maize are among the first to include the use of particle bombardment transformation for the production of plant-derived vaccines. [Pg.142]

Essential to the identification of H-induced defects in silicon was the use of a remote hydrogen plasma system as described in Section 1.2. The alternative of direct immersion in a plasma introduces charged-particle bombardment and possible photochemical effects that can obscure the purely chemical consequences of hydrogen migrating into silicon. While the evidence presented below strongly argues for the existence of H-induced defects, many issues remain to be resolved. [Pg.143]

Molecular dynamics simulations yield an essentially exact (within the confines of classical mechanics) method for observing the dynamics of atoms and molecules during complex chemical reactions. Because the assumption of equilibrium is not necessary, this technique can be used to study a wide range of dynamical events which are associated with surfaces. For example, the atomic motions which lead to the ejection of surface species during keV particle bombardment (sputtering) have been identified using molecular dynamics, and these results have been directly correlated with various experimental observations. Such simulations often provide the only direct link between macroscopic experimental observations and microscopic chemical dynamics. [Pg.283]

As demonstrated in this section, the agreement between simulation and experimental results for keV particle bombardment of solids is remarkable. This is especially true when one considers the rather crude potentials used in the calculations. To understand the reason for this agreement, the underlying features of the dynamics should be reviewed. The surface structures which are... [Pg.304]
