Paper-plastic composites

Paper-plastic composites are the most commonly used combination. The paper gives rigidity, and the plastic gives low permeabiUty and heat scalability. All the paper-plastic combinations can be used with board the most commons are the cardboard-PE and the board-PP combinations. 

Rigid paperboard containers are made of paper greater than 0.254 mm (0.010 in) in caUper and include folding cartons, cormgated ftberboard cases, and spiral wound composite cans. Many paperboard cartons require the use of inner liners or overwraps, made of protective grades of paper, plastic, or aluminum foil laminations.

MACERATE. (I) To soften or break up a fibrous substance by long soaking in water ul 01 near room temperature, often accompanied by mechanical actum, as in the preparation of paper slock in the beater. (2 in the plastics industry, to comminute a fabric so that it can be used as a filler in a plastics composition. (3) The term is also used in pharmacy to describe a method of preparing medicinal compositions. 

The packaging material is a laminate made from layers of paper, plastic (polyethylene) and aluminium foil. The particular composition for a given product is chosen according to its specific requirements. This affords the best protection to each product and keeps it in peak condition until consumed. Polyethylene is laminated to the board to make it impermeable, and an aluminium foil (of 10 p.m or less) is added to increase the barrier properties against external hazards such as sunlight and atmospheric oxygen, which would cause deterioration of product quality.

Different methods of coating are used to meet different coated product requirements (Table 10.1). The coating materials are in different forms ranging from liquids to solids. They include emulsion, latex, dispersion, lacquer, powdered plastic composition, plastisol, organosol, rubber composition, hot-melt, reacting TS compound, etc. The product could be plastic film, paper, paperboard, woven fabric, plywood, nonwoven fabric, steel sheet, aluminum foil, irregular flat or shaped products, 260... 

A functional unit is not just a quantity of material. Practitioners may compare, for example, alternative types of packaging on the functional unit basis of Im of packed and delivered product. The comparison is then in terms of the service that the packaging provides. The quantity of packaging material required to provide this functional unit, termed the reference flow, will vary in the studies depending on the packaging option selected (e.g., paper, plastic, metal, and composite).

Used particularly for paper, plastic and composite sacks. With paper sacks use a creped Kraft paper on the outside ply. Even with dusty materials this increases the coefficient of friction of the contact areas, thereby reducing the chances of unwanted movement of one sack over another. Other treatments of paper use colloidal silica or compounds containing alumina.
