Paper lamination

For many years atactic polypropylene was an unwanted by-product but today it finds use in a number of markets and is specially made for these purposes rather than being a by-product. In Europe the main use has been in conjuction with bitumen as coating compounds for roofing materials, for sealing strips where it confers improved aging properties and in road construction where it improves the stability of asphalt surfaces. Less important in Europe but more important in USA is its use for paper laminating for which low-viscosity polymers are used, often in conjunction with other resins. Limestone/atactic...

Precoated butyl latex compounds onto fabric can be used for PSAs in foil and paper lamination. These PSAs are also used in packaging and for bonding polyolefins (require adequate formulation).

Starch glues are water dispersions for libraiy paste and wallpaper paste. They coat paper for better receptivity of inks and keep the inks held out on the paper surface. They are also used in corrugated cardboard and paper laminating.

Again, many cartons used for the packing of food products comprise paper laminated with polyethylene, the bonds being by means of simple adhesives which are effective only if the plastic has been treated suitably in advance.

The data and concepts developed from research are useless to the records keeper unless they are translated into action. Examples of this action are a written procedure that can be used in the conservation laboratory and a specification that describes a product to be purchased for use in restoration. Some standards in the form of specifications for paper, laminating film, and photographic film are available. Standard procedures, developed in cooperation with a recognized U.S. standards organization for use in conservation laboratories, are not available.
