Film and Foil

Plastic films are seldom used on account of their poor thermal stability, and therefore in this Section we only discuss the use of aluminum foil as a support for TLC and HPTLC materials. For preliminary investigations, ordinary scissors can be used to cut up prepared products into smaller sizes suitable for the intended application. Here, the direction in which the layer of sorbent was applied is important abrasion marks produced in the production process will be visible on the back of the aluminum foil, and the eventual chromatographic process should be performed in the same direction. [Pg.35]

Aluminum sheets are not prewashed, as they become deformed when the subsequent necessary activation process is performed in a drying oven. Later operations can then become difficult or even impossible. [Pg.36]

Film and foil adhesives based on internally plastici2ed copolymer adhesives have been suggested. For instance, vinyl acetate—ethylene or vinyl acetate—acrylate copolymers may be used for adhesion of films to porous surfaces. For metallic foil adhesion, copolymers containing carboxylate functionahty are suggested. [Pg.470]

Thermoplastic polyamides are used in coatings to modify alkyd resins (qv) in thixotropic systems (238) and to plasticize nitroceUulose lacquers (239). DETA-taH oil fatty acid-based polyamides are suggested for use as corrosion inhibitors in alkyd paints (240). Printing inks for fiexo-gravure appHcation on certain paper, film and foil webs rely on EDA- and PDA-based polyamides for their specific performance (241). [Pg.47]

In general, properties of polyether sulfones are similar to those of polycarbonates, but they can be used at higher temperatures. Figure 12-6 shows the maximum use temperature for several thermoplastics. Aromatic polyether sulfones can be extruded into thin films and foil and injection molded into various objects that need high-temperature stability. [Pg.340]

For the sampling of aerosols, filters are the most commonly used collection substrates, but a variety of films and foils have been used with impactors to collect size-resolved samples. Sampling times vary with ambient loadings, sampling rates, substrate blanks, and analytical sensitivities but typically vary from several hours in urban areas to a day or more under clean background conditions. [Pg.171]

In many fields of use polysulfones have replaced or are replacing metals, ceramics, and thermosetting plastics, rather than other thermoplastics. Since commercial polysulfones can be injection molded into complex shapes, they avoid costly machining and finishing operations. Polysulfones can also be extruded into film and foil. The latter is of interest for flexible printed circuitry because of its high-temperature performance. [Pg.516]

Spherulites make films and foils opaque when their diameters are greater than half in wavelength of the light and when, in addition, inhomogeneities exist in relation to the density or to the refractive index. Spherulitic poly(ethylene), for example, is opaque, but spherulitic poly(4-methyl-pentene-1) is glass clear (at room temperature), even when the latter has the same number of spherulites with the same dimensions as poly(ethylene). [Pg.181]
