Panacea

Two-photon excited fluorescence detection at the single-molecule level has been demonstrated for cliromophores in cryogenic solids [60], room-temperature surfaces [61], membranes [62] and liquids [63, 64 and 65]. Altliough multiphoton excited fluorescence has been embraced witli great entluisiasm as a teclmique for botli ordinary confocal microscopy and single-molecule detection, it is not a panacea in particular, photochemical degradation in multiphoton excitation may be more severe tlian witli ordinary linear excitation, probably due to absorjDtion of more tlian tire desired number of photons from tire intense laser pulse (e.g. triplet excited state absorjDtion) [61],... 

At this point, analysts have a set of adjusted measurements that may better represent the unit operation. These will ultimately be used to identify faults, develop a model, or estimate parameters. This automatic reconciliation is not a panacea. Incomplete data sets, unknown uncertainties and incorrec t constraints all compromise the accuracy of the adjustments. Consequently, preliminary adjustments by hand are still recommended. Even when automatic adjustments appear to be correct, the resiilts must be viewed with some skepticism. 

Quantitative risk analysis (QRA) is a powerful analysis approach used to help manage risk and improve safety in many industries. When properly performed with appropriate respect for its theoretical and practical limitations, QRA provides a rational basis for evaluating process safety and comparing improvement alternatives. However, QRA is not a panacea that can solve all problems, make decisions for a manager, or substitute for existing safety assurance and loss prevention activities. Even when QRA is preferred, qualitative results, which always form the foundation for QRA, should be used to verify and support any conclusions drawn from QRA.

It is however necessary to prove carefully in each case whether the system is suited for anionic polymerizations, whether no side reactions are involved, whether initiation is fast and quantitative, whether the synthesis conditions are adequate. Accurate polymer characterization is required to check the efficiency of the preparation method. Although anionic polymerizations are extremely efficient and useful in macromolecu-lar engineering, they are no panacea and have to be applied with circumspection and much care. 

Diamond, however, is not the universal semiconductor panacea it is an indirect bandgap semiconductor and does not lase. In addition, present semiconductor materials, such as silicon and gallium arsenide, are solidly entrenched with a well-established technology, and competing with them will not be an easy task. CVD diamond will also compete with silicon carbide, which has also an excellent potential as a high-performance semiconductor material and is considerably easier and cheaper to produce. 

In a manner comparable to Christian eschatology, alchemical literature insisted on its own purificatory rituals that involved the preliminary torture, death and dismemberment of the prima materia. The canonical Catholic depiction of Christ s sacrificed body was a primary source for sixteenth and seventeenth century illustrations of the tortured body in anatomical and alchemical publications. In eflfect, the practice of Paracelsian alchemical medicine and surgery had a sacramental connotation, since the physician acted on the human body in the same manner as God worked on the great universal Macrocosmic Body. In like manner, the Paracelsian physician introduced the universal panacea, a liquid form of the philosopher s stone, into the alchemical alembic that was the Microcosmic human body. This alchemical medicine was permeated with the starry virtues of the heavens and the grace of Christ s Spirit, redeeming the body and soul of the patient by granting him not only an extended life on earth, but even eternal salvation. 

Also in the 1980s, structure-based drug design (SBDD) underwent a similar cycle. Early proponents oversold what could be achieved through SBDD, thereby causing pharmaceutical companies to reconsider their investments when they discovered that SBDD too was no panacea for filling the drug discovery cornucopia with choice molecules for development. Nevertheless, SBDD was an important advance. 

Over the last four decades, we have witnessed waves of new technologies sweep over the pharmaceutical industry. Sometimes these technologies tended to be oversold at the beginning and turned out to not be a panacea to meet the quota of the number of new chemical entities that each company would like to launch each year. Experience has shown that computer technology so pervasive at one point in time can almost disappear 10 years later. 

As a cautionary note PTC should not be considered a panacea for all of the problems associated with green chemistry. Two-phase reactions involving water are often difficult to deal with industrially, particularly if the water is contaminated with trace amounts of hazardous organic substances. In some cases it may be more practical, cost effective and environmentally prudent to avoid production of aqueous waste in favour of a recyclable less benign solvent.

It is seen that neither the MBPT nor the Cl approaches are the panacea. 

The test presented in the previous section is useful when a smaller probability of false detection is needed than is provided by the distribution-free test. However, the test in the previous section is no panacea. Reduction of the skewness through proper choice of sampling and subsampling procedures is an alternative that may have much more potential for improving the study. 

The ideal interface is rare. Table 7.3 lists the qualities required for an ideal interface from a chromatographic point of view [3]. Nowadays, hyphenation goes a long way towards total analysis systems (e.g. HPLC-UV-NMR-MS), especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Such magic-wand systems are by no means a panacea for all analytical problems they are more likely to be confined to niche applications. Multihyphenation and multidetector monitoring set their own... 

Although often used as a qualitative (identification) tool, MS may act as a quantitative inorganic mass detector. Quantification of organic analytes often takes place in combination with chromatography or in tandem MS mode. It should be realised that mass spectrometry is certainly not a panacea for all polymer/additive problems, although it is developing into a major tool for this purpose.
