Universal Panacea

In a manner comparable to Christian eschatology, alchemical literature insisted on its own purificatory rituals that involved the preliminary torture, death and dismemberment of the prima materia. The canonical Catholic depiction of Christ s sacrificed body was a primary source for sixteenth and seventeenth century illustrations of the tortured body in anatomical and alchemical publications. In eflfect, the practice of Paracelsian alchemical medicine and surgery had a sacramental connotation, since the physician acted on the human body in the same manner as God worked on the great universal Macrocosmic Body. In like manner, the Paracelsian physician introduced the universal panacea, a liquid form of the philosopher s stone, into the alchemical alembic that was the Microcosmic human body. This alchemical medicine was permeated with the starry virtues of the heavens and the grace of Christ s Spirit, redeeming the body and soul of the patient by granting him not only an extended life on earth, but even eternal salvation.

PANACEA — The Universal Panacea is one of the results of the Hermetic Work, and the only one which the philosophers of ancient times proposed as their end in view. [Note that this view is in contradiction with what has been previously cited from another source.] It is probable that the transmutation of metals was in no sense their main object, and that it was only by a consideration of the virtue and the qualities of their Medicine that they were led to apply it to the achievement of this end, which succeeded according to their hopes. 

Doubts as to whether theriac and mithridatium were the universal panacea had been voiced by Culpepper and other physicians such as Dr John Quincy, who died in 1722. The real attack on these two long-standing remedies came from Dr William Heberden (1745) in a 19 page pamphlet entitled Antitherica Essay on Mithridatium and Theriac. Heberden concludes his attack on the lack of efficacy of these products with the words ... 

In addition to the choice of relative orientation, conformational flexibility may prove to be more of a problem in future applications than for the systems described here. This is particularly likely when the molecules are very similar. Of course, it is not hard to anticipate situations for which a p-space approach is unlikely to be useful. Obvious examples are those in which the observed activity is largely dependent on the values of bulk physical properties or on well-defined steric effects. We have stressed previously [12] that no single approach to molecular similarity can be expected to be a universal panacea. For example, any comparative methodology, such as that presented here, can only very indirectly provide information concerning interactions with biological receptors. 

Melatonin has been conserved evolutionarily in almost all groups of organisms from plants to protozoa to humans. It is derived from dietary sources of the amino acid tryptophan in vertebrates. It has numerous actions and functions. Increased interest in this hormone molecule has occurred in recent years, and it has been described as a master hormone and candidate for universal panacea.13 However, caution should be exercised before going overboard in regard to the overall significance of the many important activities and actions attributed to melatonin. In observing its overall and specific importance, further studies and documentation are needed. Often, such detailed analyses temper early overenthusiasm. 

In practice, the distinction between these two definitions is somewhat blurred, because for many pest or disease problems a combination of measures is taken in the attempt to achieve control, including both chemical and nonchemical components. The term integrated pest management (IPM) is often used to describe such combination treatments, particularly those departing from the use of chemicals. However, it must be emphasised that the components of the IPM system need to be closely defined for each pest-control situation, and thus IPM in itself does not offer a universal panacea for alternatives to chemicals. The term is merely a loose generic descriptor of a wide variety of multicomponent control programmes. 

Now, to drink or not to drink coffee That is the question. .. Something has been said and has to be said on both sides. Coffee has been alternatively hell and heaven, source of all the diseases or a universal panacea. A French song dating from the beginning of the Eighteenth century (reported in Remedes d autrefois par le Docteur Cabanes, A.Maloine, Ed., 1910) said inter alia ... 

In complex cases, it is obvious that a DM approach will not be appropriate. DM is not a universal panacea to the problems of creaking healthcare systems It can, however, play a part where appropriate. 

Once it became widely known alcohol was used as a medicine, appearing to be a virtually universal panacea. Externally applied it helped to heal wounds, dry sores, and remove dirt. Internally applied it alleviated pain and served as a mood elevator. By the next century a Catalonian monk, John of Rupescissa, referred to alcohol as aqua vitae, the water of life, and prescribed it as an elixir for sick metal—to make it gold—as well as for human health. Other medical practitioners used alcohol—an excellent solvent for organic materials—to extract oils from plants, and they investigated medicinal properties of extracts. 

There are many approaches to sample preservation. For example, if the analyte shares structural similarities with another compound for which there is a proven preservation protocol, then all that may be required is a duplication of the procedure. For a novel compound, the instability problem may require a novel approach. It is important to realize that preservatives may only slow the rate of analyte degradation - they are not always a universal panacea. 

P. Kollman I certainly agree that this approach is no universal panacea in fact it is only directly relevant to weak (non-covalent) bonding. In addition, a direct calculation (at least at the point charge level) is required to compare different substrates, after taking into account their differences in hydrophobicity. 

Carbon fibers however are not the universal panacea, and they have several drawbacks which makes them unsuitable for many applications they are brittle and have low impact resistance and, as a result, are difficult to weave. They also have a coefficient of thermal expansion smaller than most matrix materials, and this mismatch may cause internal stresses in the... 

It seems that oxytocin isn t a universal panacea, and we are only part of the way to understanding this fascinating molecule. 

Sigma-delta ADCs are not a universal panacea, as they still only acquire data no faster than 200 kHz. Although this appears to be fast, both the interferogram and the laser signal have to be oversampled by as much as an order of magnitude. Hence the actual digitization rate is equivalent to only 20 kHz for a sample-and-hold ADC. At the present time this limits the use of these high-bit ADCs to slower data acquisition rates.
