Painting solvent resistance

These pigments are sensitive to heat and bleed ia most paint solvents. They are, however, resistant to acids and bases. Their tinctorial strength is considerably greater than that of inorganic yellows but they are weaker than the diaryUde yellows. They are used extensively ia emulsion paints, paper coating compositions, inks (qv), and, depending on particle size, can ia some cases be used outdoors because of excellent lightfastness ia full shades. [Pg.25]

In general, polycarbonate resins have fair chemical resistance to aqueous solutions of acids or bases, as well as to fats and oils. Chemical attack by amines or ammonium hydroxide occurs, however, and aUphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons promote crazing of stressed molded samples. Eor these reasons, care must be exercised in the choice of solvents for painting and coating operations. Eor sheet appHcations, polycarbonate is commonly coated with a sihcone—sihcate hardcoat which provides abrasion resistance as well as increased solvent resistance. Compounds based on S—EB—S usually contain polypropylene, which improves solvent resistance and processibiUty and raises upper service temperatures. Compounds intended for use in the automotive industry are able to survive 1000 hours air exposure at temperatures of 125°C with only minor changes in properties (54). Very soft compounds have been developed to replace foam mbber for interior trim parts. In this and similar appHcations, these soft compounds are usually insert molded over polypropylene or metal and then coated with flexible polyurethane paint (55). Phenolic resins are useful surface coating materials. Resols are useful for stoving lacquers for coating chemical plant, textile equipment, razor blades, brassware cuid food cans. Phenolic resins are used with poly(vinyl formal) as a flexible, tough and solvent-resistant wire enamel. Oil-soluble resins based on synthetic phenols form the basis of some gloss paints. [Pg.661]

Solvent resistance This varies from very poor (for chlorinated rubbers) to good (for polyurethanes). All paint binders have specific susceptibilities and the presence of small quantities of the appropriate solvent in the atmosphere in the region of an item of plant can cause rapid failure. [Pg.909]

Lifting may also occur if a paint containing strong solvents (xylol or solvent naphtha, not to mention such active solvents as esters and ketones) is applied (not necessarily by brushing) over a paint which is not resistant to them. The older an oxidising paint film becomes, the more solvent-resistant it will be. Short-oil media and pigment-rich paints are not so prone to lifting. This type of failure is not restricted to oil-base materials it can, for example, also occur with chlorinated rubber paints. [Pg.614]

Materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene and acetal, which have waxy surfaces, or other crystalline plastics that are very solvent resistant, can be difficult to paint and require special primers or pre-treatments (flame, etc.) for satisfactory adhesion. This colorant is produced in the USA, where it also plays a minor role on the market. Its shade is a reddish yellow. P.Y.60 is used in trade sales paints and in emulsion paints. P.R.146 is a bluish red pigment with very good solvent resistance, even compared to other group II Naphthol AS pigments. It is primarily used in printing inks, coatings, and paints. [Pg.301]

Commercially available P.O.46 types are usually quite transparent. They are employed primarily in packaging printing inks, also in offset and metal deco printing. Publication gravure inks, plastics, especially PVC, LDPE, and elastomers, as well as general industrial paints are suitable media for pigment application. P.O.46 is less solvent resistant than P.R.53 1, but it is faster to alkali and acid.
